Postdoc Single Cell Rna Sequencing Analysis specialists focus on analyzing single-cell transcriptomics data, often requiring biological expertise and lab experience. In contrast, Postdoc Bioinformatics roles emphasize computational skills and software development to interpret large datasets across various biological contexts. Both roles are vital in genomics research but differ in their primary focus and skill set.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Single Cell RNA Sequencing Analysis, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc in Single Cell RNA Sequencing Analysis, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by a PhD in a relevant field. Proficiency with computational tools such as R, Python, and specialized single-cell analysis platforms (e.g., Seurat, Scanpy), as well as experience with data visualization and next-generation sequencing, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaboration skills help distinguish top candidates in interdisciplinary research environments. These skills enable accurate data interpretation, drive innovation, and support impactful scientific discoveries in complex biological systems.

What are some common challenges faced by postdocs working in single cell RNA sequencing analysis, and how can they be addressed?

Postdocs in single cell RNA sequencing analysis often encounter challenges such as managing large and complex datasets, integrating multi-omic data, and staying current with rapidly evolving bioinformatics tools. Collaborating closely with wet lab scientists and computational biologists is essential to interpret results accurately and to troubleshoot technical issues. Building strong programming and statistical skills, as well as actively participating in lab meetings and seminars, can help address these challenges and contribute to both personal growth and successful project outcomes.

What does a Postdoc in Single Cell RNA Sequencing Analysis do?

A Postdoc in Single Cell RNA Sequencing (scRNA-seq) Analysis specializes in analyzing gene expression data from individual cells. Their main responsibilities include processing raw sequencing data, performing quality control, identifying cell types or states, and interpreting biological insights from the data. They often develop or apply computational methods to handle large datasets, collaborate with experimental biologists, and present findings through publications or conferences. The ultimate goal is to understand cellular heterogeneity and uncover new biological mechanisms at the single-cell level.

Job description

The Wistar Institute is a world leader in early-stage discovery science in the areas of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease. Wistar is committed to accelerating research advances from bench to bedside through brilliant science and distinctive approaches to collaboration among scientific investigators and academic and industry partners. Wistar’s dynamic environment supports the advancement of discoveries that will change the future of human health.

The Wistar Institute is seeking outstanding candidates for faculty positions at the Assistant and Associate Professor level in the Wistar HIV Cure and Viral Diseases Center. Areas of particular high interest include a focus on molecular virology of integrated provirus, AI/bioinformatics approaches to HIV reservoir analysis and immunotherapy. Candidates with research focuses using HIV molecular virology, novel tools and approaches for target identification/validation, pathogenesis, approaches in humanized mice or other novel animal models, in vivo screening systems, CRISPR-Cas/editing, single cell and immune profiling approaches are encouraged to apply.

Applicants who have established strong publication track records and a trajectory toward or established independent research supported by extramural funding are preferred. Candidates with current funding will be given priority.  The successful candidates will be expected to pursue extramurally-funded competitive research programs with a primary focus on basic and/or translational studies in the context of HIV Cure and Viral Diseases.

The Wistar Institute is an exceptional institute for advancing a career in research.  It is among the most accomplished U.S. institutes in the area of translational vaccine/biologic research. The Wistar Institute is the nation’s first independent biomedical research Institute with long-standing NCI Cancer Center designation. It has a strong technology transfer focus for biomedical research. The Institute offers a highly competitive start-up package in addition to an outstanding and interactive collaborative research environment.

The Institute offers a state-of-the-art vivarium and access to outstanding core facilities in proteomics and metabolomics, genomics, microscopy, high-throughput molecular screening, spatial transcriptomics, medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics, and flow cytometry, humanized mouse models, among others. The Institute’s location adjacent to the campuses of the University of Pennsylvania, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Drexel University, provides for a wonderful work and living environment for vigorous academic and clinical collaborations.  Wistar is a very attractive destination for training opportunities for undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Applications will be reviewed as received and will be accepted until the positions are filled. To ensure timely consideration, applications will be reviewed using a rolling format. The application should include: a curriculum vitae, a summary of past and future research interests (no more than 3 pages), and history of accomplishments, talks and research funding support (as applicable). Applications (submitted as a single PDF) should be sent by e-mail to: Maria Colelli, Faculty Search Coordinator, (mcolelli@wistar.org), The Wistar Institute, 3601 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
