What are some typical challenges faced by Postdoc Radiation researchers when starting a new project?

Postdoc Radiation researchers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new laboratory equipment, mastering specialized radiation safety protocols, and integrating into multidisciplinary teams that include physicists, engineers, and clinicians. Navigating complex regulatory requirements and ensuring compliance with institutional and governmental safety standards can also be demanding. Additionally, balancing independent research responsibilities with collaborative projects and mentorship duties requires strong organizational and communication skills. However, support from experienced colleagues and structured onboarding programs can help ease the transition.

What are Postdoc Radiation positions?

Postdoc Radiation positions are postdoctoral research roles focused on radiation science, which may include radiation physics, radiation biology, or medical radiation applications. These positions are typically intended for individuals who have recently earned a PhD and wish to gain additional research experience and expertise in the field of radiation. Postdocs often work in academic, government, or industry research labs, contributing to ongoing projects, publishing results, and developing their own research skills. The experience gained in a postdoc radiation position can help prepare researchers for independent academic positions or advanced roles in research and industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Radiation, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc in Radiation, you need an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in physics, medical physics, or a related field, with a strong background in radiation science and research methodologies. Familiarity with radiation detection and measurement instruments, statistical analysis software, and compliance with safety regulations is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective scientific communication are critical soft skills for success in research environments. These competencies ensure accurate experimentation, high-quality research output, and adherence to safety and ethical standards in radiation studies.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to perform research under the direction of Professor Aman Haque (Mechanical Engineering) & Professor Doug Wolfe (Materials Science & Engineering).

Job Duties:

  • Perform electrical characterization on semiconductor devices as function of radiation exposure. The specimens are discrete wide bandgap devices (diodes and transistors), as well as larger systems (field programmable gate arrays, memory).

  • Collaborate with national lab(s) to perform experiments that mimic ionizing radiation.

  • Perform modeling and/or experimental analysis (microscopy, spectroscopy) to investigate the fundamentals of radiation effects in electronics.

  • Analyze data.

  • Disseminate findings in journals and conferences.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must have Ph.D. by the start of the appointment in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical/Materials/Nuclear Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Must be a US citizen.

  • Must pass the Sandia National Lab Screening and receive approval to the National Lab.

  • Excellent foundation on semiconductor device physics, reliability.

  • Hands on experience with device and system (FPGA, memory) characterization.

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills.

  • Experience in radiation effects (single event, total ionize dose, displacement damage) is very helpful.

Additional Information:

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter describing their interest in the position, a CV including a publication list, and names & contact information of up to three references.

This is a term appointment, funded for one year from the date of hire, with a possibility of renewal.
