Description:

Course number and title: MAT202H5F Intro To Discreet Mathematics (emergency post)

Course description: Mathematics derives its great power from its ability to formulate abstract concepts and techniques. In this course, students will be introduced to abstraction and its power through a study of topics from discrete mathematics. The topics covered will include: Sets, relations and functions; Basic counting techniques: subsets, permutations, finite sequences, inclusion-exclusion; Discrete probability: random variables paradoxes and surprises; Basic number theory: properties of the integers and the primes. The course will emphasize active participation of the students in discussion and written assignments..

Estimated course enrolment: 80

Number of positions: 1 SIA

Size of appointment: 40 hrs

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026; Tutorials.

Salary: $55.25/hour + 4% vacation pay

Minimum qualifications: Strong grades in a minimum of 3.0 FCEs of mathematics courses, including at least 1.0 FCEs of primarily proof-based courses. Note that "MAT-like" courses offered in different departments do not count towards the FCE requirement as they do not adhere to the standards of rigour used in mathematics courses. In the alternative, applicants whose portfolio includes at least 2.0 FCEs of MAT specialist classes will be deemed to have satisfied the FCE requirement. The candidate must have strong grades and demonstrated knowledge of the course content and beyond; have a demonstrated record of commitment to teaching pedagogy and student learning; have a demonstrated record of timeliness in communication and carrying out duties; and possess excellent communication skills and professionalism.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience preferred

Relevant criterion: Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Description of duties: Will include some of the following: running tutorials, marking, invigilation, office hours, preparatory work, and other duties of administering the course.
