What are some common challenges faced by postdocs working in magnetic materials research, and how can they be addressed?

Postdocs in magnetic materials research often encounter challenges such as balancing independent research with collaborative projects, staying updated with rapidly evolving techniques, and securing funding for their work. Additionally, the interdisciplinary nature of the field may require learning new characterization methods or computational skills. These challenges can be addressed by actively participating in seminars, seeking mentorship from senior researchers, and collaborating across departments to broaden technical expertise and access shared resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Magnetic Materials, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc in Magnetic Materials, you need a PhD in physics, materials science, or a related field, with expertise in magnetism and advanced materials characterization. Familiarity with experimental techniques such as SQUID magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, and computational modeling tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective scientific communication set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure rigorous research, innovation, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are postdoc positions in magnetic materials?

Postdoc positions in magnetic materials are research roles for individuals who have completed a PhD and wish to further specialize in the study of magnetic materials. These researchers investigate the properties, synthesis, and applications of materials with magnetic characteristics, often working in academic or industrial laboratories. Postdocs typically conduct experiments, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, publish scientific papers, and may mentor graduate students. Their work contributes to advancements in technology areas such as data storage, sensors, and medical devices.

POSITION SPECIFICS

The Department of Physics at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking to fill a postdoc position in the areas of superconducting hybrid devices involving superconductors with graphene and topological thin film materials.

The successful candidate will lead in thin film synthesis, device fabrication, and transport measurement of devices involving superconductors interfaced with graphene, topological materials and other 2D systems. The project requires fabrication of superconducting thin films using a HPCVD process, nanofabrication, and low temperature and high magnetic field measurements. The ideal candidate should have very good knowledge and experience in the areas of topological superconductivity, quantum materials, and superconducting devices. Technical experience in the areas of epitaxial growth of thin films using CVD and related technique is preferred. Other knowledge of pulsed-laser deposition, sputtering deposition, photo- and electron beam lithography, and transport and superconductivity measurements at low temperatures are also appreciated.

Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics, materials or device physics. Applications must be submitted electronically and include a cover letter, CV, and statement of research interests. Applicants should arrange for three reference letters to be submitted to physicsapply@psu.edu indicating the appropriate job number in the subject line. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a suitable candidate is found.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
