Description of Position Cisco Networking and Cybersecurity Lab Department: Information Technology / Computer Science Reports to: Networking and Cybersecurity Lab Coordinator or Faculty Supervisor Employment Type: Part-time student employment Work Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week during the academic term; some evening hours may be required Compensation: $~16.00 per hour Position Summary The Yavapai Colle ge Student Worker Computer Lab Technician supports the daily operation of the college's Cisco networking and cybersecurity lab. Under the supervision of faculty or technical staff, the technician helps maintain lab equipment, prepares hands-on learning environments, assists students with basic technical issues, and promotes safe and responsible use of college technology. This position is designed for a currently enrolled student interested in networking, cybersecurity, information technology, or a related field who have completed at least one year of student or have a Computer Science faculty sponsor

It provides practical experience with Cisco networking equipment, computer hardware, operating systems, virtualization, and cybersecurity lab environments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Open, close, and monitor the lab and assist students with networking and cybersecurity labs during assigned hours. Provide courteous, first-level technical assistance to students using lab computers, software, and networking equipment.

Prepare lab workstations and equipment for classes, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. Connect, organize, label, and lab related equipment. Assist with basic device setup, cable testing, console connections, and approved configuration tasks under staff supervision.

Install or update approved software, operating-system images, virtual machines, and instructional files. Help maintain lab environments used for coursework. Troubleshoot basic hardware, software, login, connectivity, printing, and peripheral issues.

Reset lab equipment and restore workstations or virtual environments after exercises. Report damaged equipment, security concerns, policy violations, and unresolved technical problems to the supervisor. Maintain accurate equipment inventories, checkout records, maintenance logs, and support documentation.

Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of safety hazards. Assist faculty and staff with special lab projects, equipment testing, classroom demonstrations, and technology events. Follow college policies related to acceptable use, privacy, cybersecurity, accessibility, and workplace safety.

Protect passwords, configurations, student information, and other confidential or sensitive data. Perform other related duties appropriate to a student employment position. Minimum Expectations & Requirements Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled at the college and meeting its student-employment eligibility requirements.

Completed, or currently enrolled in, introductory coursework in networking, cybersecurity, information technology, computer science, or a related discipline. Basic knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, and network concepts. Familiarity with concepts such as IP addressing, Ethernet, routers, switches, and common network cables.

Ability to follow written procedures and technical instructions carefully. Strong dependability, organization, communication, and customer-service skills. Ability to work independently while recognizing when an issue should be escalated.

Commitment to ethical conduct, confidentiality, and responsible use of cybersecurity tools. Willingness to learn new technologies and accept coaching from faculty and staff. Preferred Skills & Abilities Preferred Qualifications Completion of Cisco Networking Academy courses or progress toward a CCST, CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Security+, A+, or similar certification.

Experience with Cisco IOS, Packet Tracer, Wireshark, Linux, Windows, or command-line tools. Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, or Proxmox. Experience assembling computers, replacing components, installing operating systems, or troubleshooting network connections.

Previous customer-service, help-desk, tutoring, or computer-lab experience. Interest in pursuing a career in networking, cybersecurity, systems administration, or technical support. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic understanding of the OSI and TCP/IP models.

Ability to recognize common networking components, ports, connectors, and cable types. Ability to document technical issues clearly and accurately. Strong attention to detail when handling equipment and following lab procedures.

Cybersecurity and Ethical-Use Expectations The lab may contain security tools and intentionally vulnerable systems used for instruction. The Student Worker Computer Lab Technician must use these resources only for authorized educational or support activities. Testing, scanning, monitoring, password recovery, configuration changes, or access to systems must be performed only with explicit permission and within the assigned scope.

Any suspected security incident, unauthorized access, loss of equipment, or exposure of confidential information must be reported immediately to the supervisor. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work is primarily performed in a classroom or computer-lab environment. Regularly uses computers, networking devices, hand tools, and electronic test equipment.

Frequently sits, stands, bends, reaches, and works at or beneath computer workstations. Must be able to move and position equipment weighing up to approximately 30 pounds, with reasonable accommodation when needed. May occasionally work around equipment racks, power cords, raised-floor areas, or confined workstation spaces.

Must follow electrical, equipment-handling, and workplace-safety procedures.
