Job description

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Genentech.

The Opportunity

Are you fascinated by the complex cellular chess match between microbes and their hosts?

Genentech's Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions department is seeking a highly motivated, curious, and driven Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join Dr. Man-Wah Tan's laboratory. In this role, you will leverage your scientific curiosity, ingenuity and technical expertise to investigate the fundamental mechanisms by which microbial factors, biofilms, and outer membrane vesicles engage with the host mucosal barrier to facilitate chronic infection or stable colonization.

This is a unique opportunity to spearhead an independent research project at the intersection of immunology and microbiology, working closely with a world-class, cross-functional team of microbiologists, immunologists, cell biologists, and bioinformaticians. If you are looking to push the boundaries of fundamental science in an industry-leading research environment, we want to hear from you.

What You'll Do

  • Drive Innovative Research: Initiate, design, and execute a cutting-edge research project investigating the molecular interactions between commensal bacteria or pathogens and the host intestinal/respiratory mucosa.

  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work side-by-side with a diverse team of scientific experts, leveraging Genentech's vast resources to solve complex biological questions.

  • Publish and Present: Author high-impact papers for top-tier peer-reviewed journals and present your findings at scientific conferences.

Who You Are

You are a passionate scientist with a deep conceptual understanding of microbe-host dynamics and a track record of turning complex biological questions into definitive answers.

Requirements

  • Education: A recent PhD (or close to completion) in Microbiology, Immunology, Innate Immunity, Myeloid or Epithelial Cell Biology, or a closely related field.

  • Technical Expertise: Hands-on experience applying fundamental laboratory techniques in molecular microbiology, cell biology, or immunology.

  • Proven Track Record: A history of innovative scientific accomplishments, evidenced by one or more first-author papers published or accepted in a well-recognized, peer-reviewed journal.

  • Mindset: A highly collaborative spirit, strong communication skills, and a relentless drive to figure out how things work at the molecular level.
