What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fluid Mechanics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fluid Mechanics, you need an advanced degree (Ph.D.) in engineering, physics, or a related field, with strong expertise in fluid dynamics and applied mathematics. Proficiency with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, simulation tools, and programming languages like Python or MATLAB is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective scientific communication set candidates apart. These skills are crucial for conducting innovative research, publishing results, and collaborating in interdisciplinary academic or industrial teams.

What opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration can a Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics expect within a research institution?

As a Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics, you will often collaborate with researchers from related fields such as physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, and computational modeling. Many projects require interdisciplinary teamwork, particularly when tackling complex problems like turbulence modeling, microfluidics, or environmental fluid dynamics. This collaborative environment not only broadens your technical expertise but also enhances your professional network. Engaging in interdisciplinary research can also lead to co-authored publications and open pathways to new research directions or industry partnerships.

What is a Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics?

A Postdoc in Fluid Mechanics is a researcher who has completed their PhD and is engaged in advanced research related to the behavior and dynamics of fluids, such as liquids and gases. Postdoctoral researchers in this field work in academic, government, or industry labs, often focusing on areas like turbulence, computational fluid dynamics, or experimental fluid flow. Their work typically involves conducting experiments, developing simulations, publishing research papers, and collaborating with other scientists. The role is usually temporary, lasting from one to three years, and helps scholars deepen their expertise while preparing for permanent academic or industry positions.

What are the opportunities after postdoc?

Postdoctoral researchers in fluid dynamics can pursue opportunities in academia as faculty members, research institutions, or government agencies. They may also transition into industry roles in engineering, data analysis, or product development, often leveraging their expertise in modeling, simulations, and experimental techniques. Additional options include applying for research grants, obtaining certifications, or moving into consulting roles related to fluid systems.

Job description

Summary
Operating Title Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Fluid Dynamics Long Classification Title Campus Location Durham Department UNH CEPS Mechanical Engineering Summary of Position
As part of a multi-institutional collaborative DOE EPSCoR project, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct experiments in the UNH Flow Physics Facility (FPF) with application to floating offshore wind energy. The FPF, the world's largest physics-quality, low-speed boundary layer wind tunnel, affords unprecedented opportunities for reliably quantifying turbine-wake/boundary-layer-turbulence interactions. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Christopher White and Dr. Martin Wosnik at UNH and collaborate closely with modeling and simulation research partners at Brown University and Bates College as well as with colleagues at UNH carrying out modeling and simulation and field studies of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL).
The postdoctoral researcher will:
  • Contribute to the design and execution of experiments in the FPF with a focus on (a) detailed flow measurements around a turbine and a model wind farm array, (b) the very far-field evolution of a turbine wake, and fluid-structure interaction when the turbine is immersed within a turbulent boundary layer;
  • Interface with our modeling and research partners to identify and measure experimental data needed for model benchmarking and validation;
  • Lead the dissemination of results of the research effort via conference presentations and journal publications.

Candidates are expected to be highly motivated, possess strong oral and written communication skills, and have a demonstrated ability to publish high quality papers. Candidates must be experienced experimental fluid dynamicists capable of independent work, with a background that encompasses turbulent boundary layer flow. Experience in the modeling and/or testing of wind turbines is beneficial but not required. The successful candidate will be directly supported by a broad research team spanning New England and will have leeway for scientific exploration and self-directed research.
Additional Job Information
The application package must include a 2-page cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. In the cover letter, applicants should address how their professional training makes them well-suited for the advertised position and share their experience or ideas for contributing to an open and inclusive research environment. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
The target date for applications is December 1st, 2023, but the search will remain open until the position is filled. Consideration of applications will begin immediately. Please apply directly online at: https://jobs.usnh.edu. Questions should be addressed to: Christopher White, Professor and Chair, Mechanical Engineering Department, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, 03824, chris.white@unh.edu
Posting Number PF0810FY24 Acceptable Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline with a focus on experimental fluid dynamics with application to boundary layer turbulence, fluid-structure interaction, or turbine performance. Expertise in fluid flow diagnostics (e.g., hotwire anemometry, particle image velocimetry, laser doppler velocimetry). A demonstrated record of exceptional research and
ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities.
Additional Preferred Qualifications Salary Information
The position salary is $70,000 per year and is complemented by a comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental, retirement, tuition, and paid time off.
