RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

THE BASICS

Are you excited by the thought of shaping the future of healthcare in Canada? Do you want to join a growing team which aims to make transformative changes to the healthcare system? We are looking for a Research Associate to join the team and help contribute to an incredible research environment.

Under the leadership of the Research Chair in Primary Care and Population Health Systems, our research team was recently awarded a 3-year CIHR Team Grant to investigate public health system responses during the opioid crisis. Your role will be to support the Research Chair in managing the day-to-day operations of the grant, apply your scientific expertise to co-lead research projects aligning with the grant objectives, and participate in other research projects within the Research Chair portfolio. We are looking for someone who is passionate about achieving transformative health outcomes, enjoys working within a dynamic and distributed team environment, and is eager to engage in rigorous, high quality population health science.

Job summary: To provide ongoing management of a 3-year CIHR funded team grant, consult on the design and execution of research studies; lead the collection and analysis of research data; provide scientific expertise on research projects; help develop an academic culture; and build research capacity.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Make significant contributions to the execution of research studies to answer questions and solve complex research problems.
• Provide subject matter expertise on various research projects (i.e., public health systems, substance use and the opioid crisis, policy analysis, qualitative research).
• Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise, and interpret publicly available documents.
• Develop, review, and evaluate research protocols, including their feasibility and alignment with grant objectives.
• Work with the Research Chair, the research team, and relevant co-investigators to identify additional research opportunities and to turn them into well-designed research studies.
• Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative research data.
• Serve as a liaison between research team and external stakeholders to ensure clear communication and alignment on study objectives and research outputs.
• Lead/assist in the preparation of applications for grant funding.
• Lead/assist in the writing of manuscripts for submission to academic journals.
• Present research results to stakeholder groups and at academic conferences.
• Develop educational and training workshops on specific research topics and methods.
• Provide support for trainees (postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students), research volunteers, and junior research support staff.

WHO YOU ARE

• Graduate degree: PhD in public health, epidemiology, health services, health policy, or related research fields.
• Required:
  • Managing multiple research projects and teams of various scopes and sizes (5 years)
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with reference management software
  • Knowledge & applied experience in research best practices
  • Expertise in qualitative research, policy analysis, stakeholder interviews, and evidence synthesis
  • Strong scientific writing skills
  • Experience writing as first author in peer-reviewed, scientific journals
  • Understanding of public and population health systems in Canada and of the opioid crisis
  • Experience with executing research studies in the areas of public health, chronic pain, mental health, and/or substance use
  • Collaborative, interpersonal, creative, committed to research integrity, leadership, diplomacy
  • Strong organizational skills, and experience managing project timelines and meeting research milestones
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with research participants, project investigators, all levels of management and leadership staff, and other interest-holders involved in the research process
• Preferred:
  • Post-doctoral experience in public health systems, opioid crisis, and/or substance use research
  • Expertise in administrative data sets, electronic medical record data, and/or other big data sets
  • Strong data management and analytical skills
  • Expertise in clinical trials, and / or observational studies using administrative data
