Position Summary Information
General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean and the Program Chair, the Adjunct Instructor is responsible for instructing students in various music classes. Instructors will teach on-site at a correctional facility.
This position is within the Prison Education Program (PEP). Prior experience teaching in a prison context is preferred. Training and orientation are provided by the correctional facilities and Southeast Community College's Prison Education Program.
This is a part -time temporary position and is part of a pooled adjunct faculty posting for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Essential Functions
Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas
  1. Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned.
  2. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom, online, hybrid, or lab setting that are appropriate to individual student needs and may include, but are not limited to, lectures, small groups, demonstrations, and computer-assisted instruction.

Provide For Student Evaluation and Record-keeping
  1. Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
  2. Assist in gathering and interpreting data for department assessment.

Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Current knowledge of and ability/skill to teach music.
  2. Ability/skill to relate to colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors of diverse backgrounds in a positive and cooperative manner.
  3. Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom, including computer applications.
  4. Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom use.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  6. Ability to use basic computer skills.
  7. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  8. The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Master's Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in music or a music discipline appropriate to the courses being taught,OR Bachelor's degree in Music or a music discipline,PLUS a minimum of 6 graduate credits in music or a mathematics-based discipline,AND an approved plan to complete a Master's degree within 2 years that includes 18 graduate credits in the subject area.
  2. Teaching experience equivalent to at least 18 semester hours, or 6 courses/sections, at the secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Experience teaching in carceral locations.
  2. Experience teaching online and/or hybrid formats.
  3. Experience using digital conferences or distance learning technology to teach classes remotely.
  4. Graduate coursework directly related to courses that will be taught.
