Portfolio Risk Management Internship information

What is a portfolio risk management internship?

A Portfolio Risk Management Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, focused on supporting the risk management activities of an investment portfolio. Interns typically assist in analyzing financial data, identifying potential risks, and helping develop strategies to mitigate those risks within a portfolio of assets. This role provides hands-on experience with risk assessment tools, exposure to financial markets, and insights into how investment decisions are made. Interns may work closely with portfolio managers, analysts, and risk professionals to understand and manage the balance between risk and return.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a portfolio risk management internship?

As a Portfolio Risk Management intern, you can expect to assist with analyzing financial data, identifying potential risks to investment portfolios, and supporting the development of risk mitigation strategies. Interns often work closely with senior analysts and portfolio managers, using quantitative tools to assess market and credit risk exposures. You may also help prepare risk reports and participate in meetings where findings are discussed. This hands-on experience offers valuable insight into how risk management decisions are made within investment teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a portfolio risk management intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Portfolio Risk Management Intern, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, a background in finance or economics, and proficiency in data interpretation. Familiarity with risk management software, Excel, and statistical tools such as Python or R is highly valued, along with coursework or certifications in risk or investment management. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with teams and presenting findings. These skills ensure accurate risk assessment, informed decision-making, and valuable support to the portfolio management process.

Job description

The UMB Governance organization within Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) is comprised of IT leaders, project managers, architects, software engineers, and analysts coming from diverse background and experiences. Functionally, the Governance Organization provides guidance and oversight to IT processes, projects, capacity, and risk management functions to ensure appropriate strategies, policies and controls are executed effectively and efficiently. We share a strong commitment to ensure our enterprise-level systems are performing at peak capacity and we believe in fully supporting each other to achieve this goal. As the PMO Portfolio Manager for the Digital & Payments Portfolio, you will lead a team of Project Managers responsible for executing a portfolio of strategic technology initiatives aligned to the organization's roadmap and business priorities. You will be accountable for overall portfolio health and delivery, ensuring initiatives are appropriately prioritized, staffed, governed, and executed while proactively managing dependencies, risks, financials, and competing priorities. You will serve as a key partner to leaders across Technology, Product, Operations, and the business, translating strategic priorities into executable roadmaps and ensuring delivery teams remain aligned to desired business outcomes. You will also be responsible for building a high-performing project management team through coaching, development, performance management, and establishment of consistent delivery expectations and practices.

This role is hybrid (Mon through Thu on-site) for candidates in the Kansas City area and open to qualified remote candidates outside of the Kansas City area but within the US.

How you will spend your time:
  • Lead and develop a team of Project Managers responsible for delivery of strategic initiatives across the technology portfolio.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, development opportunities, and performance management to build a high-performing project management organization.
  • Maintain accountability for overall portfolio execution against approved roadmaps, strategic priorities, timelines, budgets, and expected business outcomes.
  • Partner with Product, Technology, Operations, Finance, Risk, and business leaders to translate strategic priorities and roadmaps into executable initiatives.
  • Establish portfolio-level visibility into project health, risks, dependencies, resource constraints, financials, and delivery commitments.
  • Proactively identify portfolio risks and delivery challenges, facilitate resolution, and elevate issues when appropriate.
  • Balance priorities and capacity across the portfolio and recommend sequencing or resource changes when roadmap demands exceed available capacity.
  • Establish and reinforce consistent project management, governance, planning, reporting, and delivery practices across the team.
  • Facilitate portfolio reviews and executive-level discussions regarding progress, risks, decisions, tradeoffs, and emerging priorities.
  • Build strong relationships across all levels of the organization and influence stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority.
  • Partner with business and technology leaders to continuously evolve roadmap planning, portfolio governance, and delivery practices.
  • Ensure initiatives adhere to applicable governance, risk, regulatory, quality, and project-management standards.
We are excited to talk if you have:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree and 15 years of experience in information technology portfolio, program and/or project management, including at least 3 years in managing staff in project management and/or technical roles.
  • Demonstrated people-leadership experience managing and developing Project Managers or Program Managers.
  • Experience leading a complex technology portfolio with accountability for multiple concurrent initiatives, dependencies, resources, budgets, risks, and delivery commitments.
  • Significant banking or financial services industry experience.
  • Demonstrated domain knowledge within payments and digital banking, digital products, or digital customer experiences.
  • Strong knowledge of project, program, and portfolio management methodologies, including Waterfall, Agile, and hybrid delivery models.
  • Successfully coached project managers, establish clear expectations, address performance issues, and develop future leaders.
  • Experience partnering with Product and technology leadership to translate roadmaps and strategic priorities into executable portfolios.
  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills, including the ability to clearly communicate portfolio health, risks, dependencies, decisions, and tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and build credibility with stakeholders ranging from delivery teams through executive leadership.
  • Strong financial and resource-management skills, including portfolio budgeting, forecasting, capacity planning, and prioritization.
  • Effectively operated in a complex environment with competing priorities, ambiguity, and organizational dependencies.
  • Strong understanding of banking technology and the relationship between business capabilities, customer experiences, technology platforms, operations, risk, and regulatory requirements.
