Polymer Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Polymer Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Polymer Assistant, you need a basic understanding of polymer science, laboratory techniques, and a relevant associate degree or technical diploma. Familiarity with lab equipment, safety protocols, and data recording systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate experimental support, safety, and efficient collaboration within research or production environments.

What are some typical daily tasks and responsibilities for a Polymer Assistant in a laboratory setting?

As a Polymer Assistant, your daily tasks typically include preparing chemical solutions, assisting with polymer synthesis experiments, conducting basic material testing, and maintaining laboratory equipment. You'll often work closely with polymer scientists or engineers, supporting them in sample preparation, data collection, and routine analysis. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are crucial, as you'll handle various chemicals and sensitive instruments. Additionally, you may be responsible for keeping lab records organized and assisting with inventory management.

What are Polymer Assistants?

Polymer Assistants are professionals who support the development, testing, and processing of polymer materials in various industries such as plastics, manufacturing, and research laboratories. They assist senior chemists or engineers by preparing samples, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and maintaining laboratory equipment. Their work ensures that polymers meet quality and performance standards for use in products like packaging, automotive parts, and medical devices.

What is the difference between Polymer Assistant vs Polymer Technician?

AspectPolymer AssistantPolymer Technician

Job description

What you'll do

We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Data Center Facilities Manager with facilities experience to manage the operations of our pilot data center. This role requires a proactive individual who can perform mechanical work, oversee the maintenance of equipment, and coordinate with subcontractors as needed.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

We're onsite because velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure. Solving complex problems in real-time with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Finance leaders is how we move faster than a slow, antiquated industry.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily operations of the data center, ensuring all systems function optimally.
  • Monitor and maintain air-cooled chillers, CDU systems and fan coils.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical tasks, including maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of facility systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify and resolve potential issues before they escalate.
  • Engage and coordinate with subcontractors for specialized tasks or repairs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all facility-related inquiries and issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and service requests.
  • Assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for facility operations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices within the facility.
  • Promote a safe working environment for all personnel and visitors.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in facilities management, HVAC, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in facilities management or data center operations.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, cooling technologies, and electrical systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and subcontractors.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Relevant certifications in HVAC, electrical systems, or facilities management are a plus.
  • Proficiency with "filling and infilling" (often referred to as commissioning and topping off) using specialized equipment like the Liquid Cooling Cart. This includes:
    • Performing full rack fills, drains, and air purges to remove trapped air.
    • Handling 60-liter reservoirs and managing separate "new" vs. "used" fluid to prevent contamination.
  • Experience with PG25 specifically, which is often dyed fluorescent yellow-green for rapid visual leak detection. Technicians must monitor pressure drops and flow rates, as PG25's viscosity can sometimes mask small leaks.
  • Awareness of "wetted materials" like copper cold plates, brass, and polymer piping (PP or PVDF) to prevent corrosion or biofouling.
  • Ability to service Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) and rack manifolds, including the use of Quick Disconnect (QD) or LQC connectors for spill-free maintenance.
Bonus points
  • Ideally 2-6+ years in data centers, high-performance computing (HPC) facilities, or industrial cooling.
  • Certificates:
    • EPA 608 Universal Certification: Standard for handling refrigerants and cooling systems.
    • Familiarity with standards like NFPA 110(emergency power) and ASHRAE.
  • Hands-on experience with plumbing, pump maintenance, and troubleshooting integrated electrical/mechanical systems.
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Team on-sites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
