Description
The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District was formed by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in 1968, in response to the County's first air pollution study and is classified as a Special District.
Under supervision of the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District Public Information Officer, the Clean Air Ambassador assists with departmental goals and objectives by providing technical, administrative, and clerical support across a variety of projects. The role primarily performs a wide variety of duties that support the overall success of departmental initiatives to help present lessons on air quality to elementary school students. This position may contribute to problem-solving efforts, coordinate project activities, track progress against timelines, and ensure tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
Open to currently enrolled college or university students, the ideal candidate will have some prior experience working with elementary school-aged children in educational or program-based settings; and demonstrated experience or interest in teaching and environmental education, including a basic understanding of air quality concepts.
Please note that Extra Help employees are not regular county employees and are not eligible for county benefits. Additionally, extra help employees are limited to working a maximum of 720 hours per fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Co-presents and provides engaging hands-on, and interactive lessons in elementary school classrooms with fellow Ambassadors, ensuring activities are delivered clearly, collaboratively, and in alignment with program learning objectives.
• Attends program meetings to review expectations, presentation materials, and lesson plans.
• Assists with preparation and organization of all materials needed for each lesson by following guidelines and instructions provided. After each session, the role is responsible for breaking down the workspace and properly storing equipment.
• Communicates with classroom teachers to coordinate and schedule classroom visits.
• Submits clear, timely reports summarizing classroom presentation experiences.
• Assists at VCAPCD outreach booths during community events, such as Earth Day school events, science assembles or other school garden or outdoor learning program activities, when available.
• Requests and collects lesson evaluations from classroom teachers following presentations.
• Conducts targeted outreach to encourage teacher participation throughout Ventura County.
• Follows safety procedures to ensure a secure environment and report any safety concerns or incidents in accordance with departmental policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience or education which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform this position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some knowledge of: basic principles related to education, communication, or environmental studies; techniques for gathering, evaluation, and sharing information; effective communication and interviewing methods; and basic record-keeping practices.
Ability to: collect, organize, and evaluate information; read and understand forms, instructions, and technical materials; interact comfortably and communicate clearly and professionally with staff, teachers, students, and the public; follow written and verbal instructions; use common office equipment and digital tools; access and utilize community resources; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, educators, and community members.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be willing and able to travel to schools throughout Ventura County
• Be consistently available for classroom visits on weekday mornings and/or early afternoons

DESIRED

• Current part-time or full-time enrollment status towards a related program/degree at a community college or university; may require proof of enrollment
• Interest in and enthusiasm for teaching and/or environmental education, including basic air quality concepts
• Previous experience working with elementary school-aged children
• English-Spanish bilingual skills

Physical Demands
Work may take place in an office, classroom, or outdoor environment, depending on the outreach activity. Duties may involve light to moderate physical tasks, including setting up and transporting materials. The position may require standing, walking and moving between classrooms or event locations.

ELIGIBLE LIST: Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill present and future Regular, Temporary, and Fixed-Term vacancies within the Air Pollution Control District. There is currently three (3) extra help positions within the APCD Office.
