Political Strategy information

What is political strategy?

Political strategy refers to the planning and execution of actions designed to achieve specific political objectives. This can include campaign management, legislative advocacy, public relations, coalition building, and navigating governmental processes. Professionals in political strategy analyze the political landscape, identify key stakeholders, and develop tactics to influence policy decisions or public opinion. Their work is crucial for political campaigns, advocacy organizations, and government affairs teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a political strategist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Political Strategist, you need expertise in political science, campaign management, data analysis, and a solid understanding of public policy, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in political campaigns. Familiarity with voter analytics software, digital marketing tools, and polling systems is essential for effective campaign planning and execution. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and relationship-building skills set top strategists apart in influencing stakeholders and navigating complex political landscapes. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing winning strategies, mobilizing supporters, and achieving campaign objectives in a competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in political strategy roles and how can they be addressed?

Political strategists often navigate rapidly changing political landscapes, manage competing stakeholder interests, and work under tight deadlines—especially during campaign cycles or legislative sessions. One key challenge is balancing the need for quick decision-making with thorough research and analysis. Building strong communication and collaboration skills with campaign teams, policymakers, and external partners can help address these challenges. Staying adaptable and proactive in monitoring emerging trends also supports effective strategy development.

What does a political strategist do?

A political strategist develops and implements campaign strategies to influence public opinion and election outcomes. They analyze voter data, craft messaging, coordinate media efforts, and advise candidates or organizations on political positioning, often using polling tools and communication skills. Their work typically involves research, strategic planning, and collaboration with campaign teams.

Job description

At Crooked, we believe the answer to a rising authoritarian movement is a democratic movement powerful enough to fight it and (fingers crossed) defeat it. That means using all the tools at our disposal as a media company to help build a massive, diverse coalition united behind a core set of democratic values: freedom, equality, compassion, and the rule of law.
Job Summary:
Crooked is hiring for a Volunteer & Community Engagement, Senior Associate on the Politics department reporting to the Political Programming & Strategy, Senior Manager. This role is central to executing on VSA's broader political and organizational goals because our capacity to drive impact depends directly on the size, skill, and ability to mobilize our audience to take action. This person is responsible for advancing our audience from wherever they are in their engagement journey and moving them toward deeper, more frequent, and high-impact action. That might include turning a first-time volunteer into a community leader, or an occasional donor to someone running for office.
Specifically, this person oversees two interconnected audiences. The first is our broader community of infrequent action takers, for whom they will design and execute programming that educates, inspires, and motivates people to take more action and deepen their civic and political engagement. The second is our VSA Community, a group of our most committed action takers. This person is responsible for managing this online community and creating an environment where VSA community members feel supported, invested in, and rewarded for their contributions through high-value programming and community development leadership opportunities.
This role is based out of our Washington DC office, and follows a hybrid schedule based on the job's needs. We are ideally looking for DC-based candidates or candidates willing to relocate before the start date.
How You'll Spend Your Time:
  • Design and execute a strategy that moves our audience up the ladder of engagement and continues to grow their engagement and skills once they arrive.
  • Develop programming for the broader action taker community, including trainings, expert talks, and partner conversations that lowers barriers to action, builds knowledge and confidence, and motivates people to take the next step in their engagement.
  • Manage the VSA community experience end-to-end, including exclusive programming like founder conversations, elected official briefings, advanced trainings, and community-building events that reward members for their commitment and deepen their investment in VSA's mission.
  • Identify and cultivate VSA community leaders, providing them with leadership development support and the tools they need to lead effectively within the community.
  • Work closely with the Political Programming and Strategy Manager to ensure all community and volunteer programming is aligned with VSA's political strategy and organizational priorities.
  • Handle all operational aspects of programming and community management, including virtual event logistics, platform management (Slack, Mobilize, Action Network, etc.), communications, materials preparation, and partner engagement.
  • Track, measure, and report on engagement metrics across both audiences, including movement along the engagement ladder, VSA community growth and retention, and program participation.
  • Develop feedback loops that surface community insights and integrate them into ongoing program improvements.

What You'll Bring To The Table:
  • 2-3 years of related experience (organizing, community building, campaigns, advocacy)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to articulate a compelling and inspiring vision that motivates others.
  • Excellent project management skills, with strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask
  • An understanding of political organizing and how to most effectively mobilize people for political action
  • Creative, ambitious, and willing to experiment
  • A passion for community management
  • An understanding of U.S. politics
  • Strong conceptual and critical thinking skills
  • Sense of humor

Pay and Perks:
This position is covered under the Writers Guild of America East Collective Bargaining Agreement and the salary for this role is $85,000.
In addition to your salary, we also offer full-time employees excellent benefits, including:
  • Paid healthcare
  • 401k match
  • Generous vacation and paid leave including, sick, bereavement, pregnancy loss, and disability leaves
  • 20 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Commuter reimbursement or paid parking
  • Communications stipend
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Did we also mention our offices are closed at the end of the year?

About Us
We welcome everyone-as an inclusive workplace, we invite all our employees to bring their authentic, whole selves to work. Our mission and intent is to encourage people from every nation, race/ethnicity, belief, gender, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, and culture to feel respected and valued for their unique contributions to our company.
We approach our work courageously, adapt and improve constantly, and celebrate the wins big and small. We cultivate a culture of creativity and expression at Crooked Media. We hire the best talent, ensure they have the tools and training they need, and set them free. If you have a high degree of ownership and are driven to excel, you'll fit right in.
That's it. End of mission.
