The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for two Lecturer positions.
We are one of the oldest departments on campus, over 130 years old. Our faculty specialize in a broad range of areas, including moral, legal, and social philosophy; philosophy of science; philosophy of physics; philosophy of humor; philosophy of race; philosophy of computation, technology, and artificial intelligence; metaphysics; epistemology; social and political philosophy; rational choice theory; theories of justice, community, and fraternity; philosophy of mind and cognition; philosophy of economics; and moral psychology. We have eminent scholars who trace the history of these ideas and draw on them to provide useful interventions into modern debates. Duties & Responsibilities
Position 1
Responsibilities include preparing and presenting instructional content for courses in Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Mathematics. An ability to teach a course in Philosophical Foundations of Computer Science and/or Advanced Logic would be an asset.
Position 2
Responsibilities include preparing and presenting instructional content for courses in Ethics, Social/Political Philosophy, or History of Philosophy.
Both positions
Lecturers teach three courses per semester. The Lecturer's six courses will include introductory and advanced courses.
Additional duties include monitoring and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours to meet with students outside of class time, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • PhD in Philosophy, or related areas, by the time of the appointment
  • Record of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level
  • Research experience/training in focus area of the position

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
These are full-time, 9-month appointments, non-tenure track positions. Renewal of the position is contingent on the availability of funding, positive performance reviews and sufficient course enrollments.
Target start date is August 16, 2026. The budgeted salary for this position is $60,000. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
