Policy Internships information

What is a policy internship?

Policy internships are short-term work experiences, often offered by government agencies, think tanks, advocacy groups, or nonprofits, where interns assist with research, analysis, and development of public policy. These positions provide valuable exposure to how policies are formed, evaluated, and implemented. Policy interns may attend meetings, draft briefs, and collaborate with professionals in the field, making it a great opportunity for those interested in politics, law, or public administration.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a policy intern?

As a policy intern, you can expect to work on a range of tasks such as conducting research on legislative issues, drafting memos or policy briefs, attending meetings or hearings, and assisting with data analysis. Interns often support full-time policy staff by summarizing reports, tracking relevant legislation, and helping to prepare presentations. The work environment is typically collaborative, so you’ll have opportunities to interact with different departments, attend team meetings, and contribute to ongoing projects. This hands-on experience allows you to develop a strong understanding of the policy-making process and build valuable professional connections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a policy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Policy Intern, you typically need strong research, analytical, and written communication skills, often supported by coursework in political science, public policy, or related fields. Familiarity with policy analysis tools, legislative tracking systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar software is commonly required. Initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively help interns stand out in fast-paced policy environments. These skills are crucial for effectively supporting policy development, preparing reports, and ensuring accurate communication of complex information.

As a success partner to state Medicaid agencies, this team works to interpret vague policy language and deal with ambiguity while keeping the goals of our clients at the forefront. This internship will provide you the opportunity to become familiar with a consulting firm, our systems, operations, and client relationships.
You will be immersed in dynamic, in-person learning and get to connect with other interns and experience the company culture firsthand. This summer internship is based at our office in Kapolei, HI. Upon successful completion of the internship, and depending on business need, we offer ongoing employment opportunities with remote or hybrid options serving our clients across the nation. This internship provides a unique chance to connect, learn and grow with us - both in the office and potentially from wherever you are!
We have internship openings with our Medicaid Practice group for:
  • Summer session running from May 25, 2027 to August 6, 2027.

In order to be considered, you must include your unofficial academic transcription with your application.

  • Focus on your own development with your supervisor through learning objectives that align with BerryDunn's consulting competencies.
  • Participate in new business development through activities such as research, supporting proposal content, or developing marketing materials.

You Have
  • Currently enrolled in a BA/BS/MS Degree in Public Policy, Health Management, or Public Health.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • Relevant work experience in your field is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building and teamwork.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and computer skills
  • Drive and initiative.
  • Willingness to travel.

Compensation Details
The hourly rate for this role is $30 per hour. This rate range represents BerryDunn's good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting. If an applicant possesses experience, education, or other qualifications more than the minimum requirements for this posting, that applicant is encouraged to apply, and a final rate may then be based on those additional qualifications; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
