We are seeking Lateral Police Detectives to join the Commerce City Police Department. Must have a minimum of five (5) years full-time experience as a patrol officer and a minimum of two (2) additional years of full-time criminal detective or investigative experience for a local or state law enforcement agency to be considered for this position.
Commerce City, a dynamic and diverse community with a promising future, places great emphasis on providing a safe environment for residents and members of the industrial and business sectors and enthusiastically acknowledges the essential contributions and dedication of the sworn staff of the Commerce City Police Department.
Per the CCPD FOP CBA, the City will annually survey eight comparable agencies to determine annual pay rate minimum and maximum averages. The City will then add three (3%) percent to those averages to set new pay scales. Intermediate steps will be equally spaced out based on the new minimum and maximum pay rates. The pay scale adjustments will occur annually in May.
The Commerce City Police Department fosters and actively engages in community-based policing initiatives that promote a standard of excellence in providing police services in Commerce City and the region. The Commerce City Police Department is hiring the most qualified candidates who can demonstrate the personal character and competency that will contribute to the Department's success. The most qualified candidates will be dedicated to service of others over self, will have experience or an articulable understanding of the community-based policing philosophy, can demonstrate their ability to communicate and problem solve effectively, and can work collaboratively in a team environment.
A Police Detective performs general and specific law enforcement and investigative functions within the municipal environment. Detectives observe and act upon circumstances that call for law enforcement intervention. Detectives manage criminal case loads and conduct follow up investigative activities to support the successful prosecution of offenders. Detectives are expected to work minimal direct supervision. Detective work involves developing trusting relationships through active community engagement, responding to complaint calls, investigating crimes, mediating civil disputes, preparing reports, collecting and submitting evidence related to criminal investigations, testifying in court, training new personnel, apprehending violators or suspects, and general policing duties, such as enforcing traffic laws, educating the community, and patrolling the City in an official vehicle to deter and prevent crime. Detectives are expected to exercise responsibility and discretion in the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Detectives are expected to exercise independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, and exercising safety practices and procedures. Detectives work in high-risk and stressful situations, challenging environmental conditions and demanding work schedules.

Essential duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by Police Officers (Detectives); they are not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities, and skills required. A Police Officer (Detective) performs general and specific law enforcement functions within the municipal environment, including but not limited to:
  • Actively engage the community and build trusting relationships with community members, co-workers and colleagues; educate the community about the law and police practices.
  • Exercise leadership in the community to implement problem-solving activities.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with routine, dangerous or unusual situations, safety practices and procedures.
  • Patrol an assigned area searching for indicators of possible criminal activity or threats to life and property; answer calls for police service; enforce municipal ordinances and state laws; make field contacts and prepare required reports; conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents.
  • Make traffic stops and issue warnings or citations as necessary; check vehicles and observe occupants of vehicles; respond to traffic-related incidents and other emergencies; provide first aid for injured persons, and take safeguards to prevent further accidents; interview principals and witnesses; take written statements and examine conditions of accident scenes; clear or direct the clearing of obstructions and wreckage; observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist, advise and educate motorists and enforce traffic laws.
  • Make arrests as necessary; serve warrants and subpoenas; conduct searches and seizures involving people, vehicles and structures; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; interrogate suspects; mediate civil disputes, gather and preserve evidence; receive, search and book prisoners; fingerprint and transport prisoners; testify and present evidence in court.
  • Write reports and field notes; participate in individual and staff development; attend briefings and training sessions; perform routine maintenance on assigned firearms and other department issued equipment.
  • Assist the public and answer questions; administer first aid and respond to calls for medical assistance; establish and maintain good relationships with the public.
  • Maintain knowledge of local ordinances and state laws, rules of evidence for criminal cases, crime prevention techniques, current investigation techniques, traffic control techniques, and care and custody of persons and property.
  • Drive vehicles under normal, hazardous and emergency conditions.
  • Availability to work long hours and to called out while off duty.
  • Work consistently and effectively without direct supervision; autonomously but work well in a team environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and city laws, ordinances, and regulations, the vehicle code, penal code, laws of arrest; search and seizure; rules of evidence; and court procedures.

  • Knowledge, skill and ability to obtain information through deliberate interview, interrogation, and observation techniques.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least twenty-one (21) years old
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver's license OR are eligible to obtain a Colorado driver's license upon hire
  • Earned a High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) or high school equivalency certificate
  • Colorado P.O.S.T. Certified or eligible for Colorado P.O.S.T. certification
  • A United States Citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for United States Citizenship
  • Currently employed by a local, county or state law enforcement agency as a certified peace officer (Does not include corrections or detention officers)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience as a patrol or related law enforcement officer position
  • Minimum of an additional two (2) years of full-time criminal detective or investigative experience for a local or state law enforcement agency
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ten (10) or more years of law enforcement experience
  • Three (3) or more years of investigative experience
  • Spanish language fluency
  • Bilingual language skills, or American Sign Language skills
  • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours or the equivalent from an accredited institution
MINIMUM DISQUALIFICATIONS
  • Applicant who has applied and has been dismissed from a Police Officer hiring process for the Commerce City Police Department within the last twelve (12) months
  • Applicant has a felony conviction
  • Applicant received a Court Martial for a crime that is the equivalent of a felony under state or federal law, or received a Dishonorable or Less Than Honorable Discharge from the U.S. military
  • Applicant has a conviction for a crime that prevents applicant's ability to retain their Colorado P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer
  • Applicant has legally or illegally possessed or consumed marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last twelve (12) months
  • Applicant's driver's license has been revoked or suspended in the last twelve (12) months
  • Applicant's driver's license has been revoked or suspended two (2) or more times in the last five (5) years
  • Applicant has illegally sold, manufactured or distributed any controlled substance, prescription drug, steroid or marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last ten (10) years
  • Applicant has a conviction or deferred judgment for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last five (5) years
  • Applicant has two (2) or more convictions or deferred judgments for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last seven (7) years
  • Applicant has had a conviction or deferred judgment for hit and run, or failure to remain at the scene of an accident in the last five (5) years
