Position Description
Definition
LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions. LVMPD internships are offered only to current college students, not granted to individuals merely wanting to obtain work experience, and must be performed in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part-time basis, for instance 8 hours per week, within one semester. No free housing is offered, regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student. The following LVMPD units have accepted interns in the past: Crime Scene Investigations, Forensic Laboratory, Public Information Office, Office of Labor Relations, Victim Services Unit, Recruiting, Detention Services Division, Emergency Management and Counter Terrorism. However, actual availability of internships in the different LVMPD sections varies by semester based on mentor availability.
Interns have no law enforcement power. They are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor, interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned, non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions
Internship applicants must:
- Be endorsed by the college/university for the proposed internship.
- Be age 18 and above.
- Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident alien.
- Be a current student of good academic standing with a 2.75 GPA or higher, enrolled in an accredited United States college/university that offers credits counted towards graduation for completing an internship with a law enforcement or criminal justice agency.
- Have already completed the first year in an Associate's degree program or the second year in a Bachelor's degree program; or currently pursuing a Master's degree.
- Be able to work a minimum of eight hours per week.
- Be available to travel to Las Vegas at their own expense for an in-person background interview (out-of-area successful candidates).
Position-specific Condition
Interns may be required to work nights and weekends, depending on assignment.
Best Candidates Will have already committed to majoring in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Police Science, Public Administration, Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Marketing or a related field.
Detention Services: Will have already committed to majoring in Criminal Justice, Police Science, Social Work, Corrections or a related field.
Selection Process
- Minimum qualifications screening.
- Application packet reviewed by respective LVMPD area for consideration.
- If selected, meet with a background investigator at LVMPD Headquarters in Las Vegas at the student's expense. Out of state applicants are advised to take the time and expense involved in this process into consideration prior to applying.
- Background investigation lasting 90 days in most cases. **
- Candidate notified of background investigation results.
At this time, the LVMPD does not hire interns on a provisional hire basis. Therefore, all background requirements must be completed prior to the start of the internship.
Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees conducting the process and may be subject to a search.
Additional Selection Process
The background investigation takes approximately 90 to 120 days to complete. You must also meet the LVMPD Hiring Standards. LVMPD employees participate in the Department's random drug screening process. For more information on the background process, click for a quick video or for specific information.
