Job Description Market Range: 09 Hiring Salary: $29.90/Hourly JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Police Sergeant serves as first line supervisor, under the direction of the patrol commander (Lieutenant). This position supervises the activity of several police and security officers, review reports and direct activities of assigned personnel. Additionally, this position responds to the scene of any significant incident to coordinate subordinate staff performance, as well as coordinate enforcement efforts with MPD and other law enforcement agencies. Responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves as shift supervisor of an assigned shift.
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot or in police car to detect crime and arrest violators.
  • Notifies supervisors and/or authorities of theft, trespassing, fires, or other unusual events; coordinates with other law enforcement agencies as necessary.
  • Regulates pedestrian and vehicular traffic; investigates traffic accidents and files preliminary accident reports.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and files charges on suspects when appropriate; prepares and presents testimony in court concerning traffic violations, burglaries, and other offenses.
  • Transports money for various University units; provides security for special University events.
  • Assists Lieutenant in reviewing work of designated employees; assists and instructs designated officers in investigations and other unusual situations; assists in training of police and security officers.
  • Evaluates operational needs and assigns personnel and equipment resources under his/her supervision in a manner which provides for the most effective and efficient use of personnel and equipment.
  • Communicates directives, orders, and objectives to personnel under his/her supervision. Issues instructions to field officer; attends training modules and ensures officers meet training requirements; performs annual evaluations of personnel assigned to shift.
  • Monitors and documents personnel performance and takes appropriate disciplinary action when needed. Identifies and analyzes problems and makes solution recommendations to management. Reviews paperwork submitted by subordinates for accuracy.
  • Maintains mental alertness and assumes command in critical incidents or emergency situations. Responds to inquiries, requests and major incidents reported to Campus Police.
  • Provides information about the University to students, staff, and the general public.
  • Keeps commanding officers aware of all notable situations.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of relevant progressively responsible experience; OR Associate's Degree and one (1) year of relevant progressively experience; OR a combination of college course work and work experience to equal three (3) years. (Previous law enforcement supervisory experience preferred.) LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Candidate must be P.O.S.T. certified. Must be at least 21 years old and have a valid Driver's License in State of residency in order to drive a patrol car. Must meet the minimum standards for pre-employment as stated by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. Must be a U.S. citizen; pass a physical and psychological exam; consent to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprints; qualify to carry a firearm. (PROOF OF CERTIFICATION AND DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of CAD's Systems, computer, and basic software.
  • Good verbal and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is frequently required to work weekends and evenings. May require occasional overnight travel.
