Police Officer Trainee
Job Description
Responsible for performing elementary and routine police tasks, chiefly of the clerical nature, not requiring the exercise of police powers and performed at the training level. Work is performed under close supervision of the Police Sergeant in accordance with well-established procedures. No supervision is exercised over other employees.
Essential Functions
- Performs elementary and routine police tasks, chiefly of a clerical nature, not requiring the exercise of police powers, and performed to acquire knowledge of departmental functions and procedures.
- Maintains and files records, operates office machines, answers telephones, codes messages, receives complaints, enters and indexes official documents, acts as escort, guide and messenger, prepares and tabulates facts and figures for statistical purposes.
- Performs other related duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to learn police theories, policies and practices through in-service training, seminars, formal college courses and work assignments.
- Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to record them clearly and completely.
- Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and to develop some skill in the operation of standard or other office machines.
- Ability to maintain a variety of police records and to prepare routine reports from such records.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be between the ages of 17.5-23 by the date of the exam. Must be 18 by the date of hire.
- Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License
