What is a podium presenter?

Podium Presenters are individuals who deliver oral presentations at conferences, seminars, or academic meetings. They typically share research findings, project results, or expert insights with an audience, often using slides or other visual aids. These presentations are usually timed and may be followed by a question-and-answer session. Podium Presenters are often selected through a competitive abstract submission process and play a key role in disseminating knowledge and engaging with peers in their field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a podium presenter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Podium Presenter, you need excellent public speaking abilities, subject matter expertise, and often a relevant academic or professional background. Familiarity with presentation software like PowerPoint or Keynote, and sometimes knowledge of virtual conferencing tools, is typically required. Strong communication, confidence, and adaptability help presenters engage diverse audiences and respond to questions effectively. These skills ensure clear delivery of information, audience engagement, and successful knowledge transfer during formal presentations.

What are some common challenges faced by a podium presenter, and how can they be effectively managed?

Podium Presenters often face challenges such as managing time limits, engaging diverse audiences, and handling unexpected technical issues. To navigate these, presenters should practice their material with strict timing, prepare visual aids that support but do not overshadow their message, and familiarize themselves with the event’s AV equipment in advance. Building flexibility into presentations and being ready to answer audience questions confidently can also enhance delivery and demonstrate professionalism.

Job description

The Commercial team at EyePoint focuses on bringing innovative therapies to patients by ensuring healthcare providers, partners, and communities have access to treatment, reimbursement, and are able to use the product appropriately. This team uses data-driven insights, market access strategies, and a patient-centric approach to improve awareness, access, and adoption of EyePoint’s therapies to help improve vision outcomes for people with serious retinal diseases.

The Executive Director, Field Marketing will architect and lead the KOL engagement and advocacy strategy for EyePoint Pharmaceuticals’ retina franchise. This leader is responsible for building deep, strategic relationships with national, regional, and emerging retina opinion leaders; cultivating advocacy networks across academic and community settings; driving KOL-led scientific content and digital advocacy; and serving as the strategic liaison between the retina KOL community and EyePoint’s commercial and medical organizations. This position will lead a team of remote, field-based, Field Marketing Managers to engage directly with thought leaders in retina.

EyePoint is building its commercial infrastructure to support the anticipated launch of DURAVYU for wet AMD. As the TKI class emerges in retina, physician education, advocacy, and opinion leader engagement will be critical to establishing DURAVYU’s scientific credibility, differentiated positioning, and adoption among retina specialists. This role is distinct from peer-to-peer marketing (which focuses on speaker programs and promotional P2P) — the Head of Field Marketing focuses on strategic relationship development, advocacy cultivation, and ensuring EyePoint is deeply embedded in the retina community.

Reporting to the SVP, Marketing and Strategy, this role will partner closely with Medical Affairs, Peer-to-Peer Marketing, HCP Marketing, Sales, and the broader Commercial Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities KOL Engagement & Advocacy Strategy
  • Design and execute a strategic, tiered KOL development plan that deepens relationships with national, regional, and emerging retina opinion leaders.
  • Develop a comprehensive engagement framework spanning advisory boards, 1:1 executive engagements, informal dinners, scientific forums, and collaborative partnerships.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with high-influence retina specialists across academic medical centers, community retina practices, and centers of excellence.
  • Establish tiered KOL segmentation aligned with commercial priorities, scientific influence, and advocacy potential.
  • Drive clinical conviction and scientific credibility for DURAVYU among the retina community.
Field-Based Team Leadership
  • Recruit, hire and lead field-based Field Marketing Manager team. Represent EyePoint to the retina thought leader community.
  • Partner with Medical Affairs on field-based insight development.
  • Work closely with Marketing Operations and Analysis to provide strategic insights to inform marketing decisions.
Retina Advocacy Network Development
  • Build and manage a nationwide retina advocacy network across academic and community settings.
  • Identify and engage next-generation retina leaders, fellowship directors, and rising KOLs.
  • Foster strong relationships for advisory, scientific content, speaker, and advocacy roles.
  • Coordinate with Medical Affairs to ensure seamless transitions between scientific and commercial engagement.
  • Leverage EyePoint’s senior leadership for high-value KOL interactions and relationship building.
  • Create memorable, meaningful KOL interactions that balance scientific depth with authenticity — reinforcing EyePoint’s retina identity.
KOL-Led Content, Podium Presence & Digital Advocacy
  • Partner with KOLs to develop scientific communications, podium presentations, and peer-influence content for key retina congresses.
  • Drive KOL-led social media engagement and digital advocacy initiatives.
  • Develop disease-awareness content featuring KOL voices across trade journals, podcasts and digital platforms.
  • Ensure KOL-led content amplifies DURAVYU’s differentiated positioning
Strategic KOL-Commercial Liaison
  • Serve as the primary strategic liaison between the retina KOL community and EyePoint’s commercial organizations.
  • Integrate KOL insights into brand strategy, competitive positioning, launch planning, and messaging development.
  • Coordinate closely with Peer-to-Peer Marketing, HCP Marketing, and Medical Affairs to ensure advocacy efforts are aligned across scientific and promotional engagement.
  • Gather and relay field intelligence from KOL interactions to inform ongoing strategy refinement.
  • Participate in competitive intelligence gathering at congresses and scientific meetings.
Required Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
Experience
  • 12+ years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology commercial experience with significant focus on KOL engagement, physician advocacy, or field-based marketing.
  • Demonstrated success building and managing physician opinion leader networks and advocacy programs.
  • Experience designing and executing KOL engagement strategies in specialty therapeutic areas.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration experience with Medical Affairs, Sales, and Marketing teams.
  • Experience working in a pre-launch or emerging commercial organization.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with academic and community physicians at all levels.
Knowledge & Capabilities
  • Deep understanding of the retina disease space, retina practice dynamics, and physician engagement models.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical compliance requirements for KOL interactions and advocacy programs.
  • Exceptional relationship management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinking combined with hands‑on execution capability.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-growing biotechnology environment.
Preferred Experience
  • Ophthalmology or retinal disease market experience.
  • Experience with retina congresses and retina KOL networks.
  • Biotechnology launch experience within a pre-commercial or emerging-growth organization.
  • Digital and social media advocacy experience.
Success Measures
  • KOL engagement depth, breadth, and advocacy activation.
  • Retina advocacy network size, quality, and engagement metrics.
  • KOL-led content output, podium placements, and digital advocacy reach.
  • KOL insights captured and integrated into commercial strategy.
  • Cross-functional collaboration effectiveness with Medical Affairs, P2P, and HCP Marketing.
  • Fellowship and emerging leader engagement program development.
  • Contribution to DURAVYU brand awareness and scientific credibility in the retina community.
