What do plumbers do on weekends?

Plumbers who work on weekends typically handle urgent plumbing issues that cannot wait until regular business hours, such as burst pipes, clogged drains, or water heater failures. Many plumbing companies offer weekend services to accommodate customers who need immediate repairs or have busy weekday schedules. Weekend plumbers may also perform routine maintenance or installations by appointment. These services often come with higher rates due to the increased demand and after-hours work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plumber working on weekends?

To thrive as a weekend plumber, you need strong knowledge of plumbing systems, installation, repair techniques, and usually a state license or certification. Familiarity with pipe inspection cameras, power tools, and scheduling or invoicing software is also important. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and reliability are crucial soft skills, especially for urgent or emergency calls. These skills ensure timely, high-quality service and customer satisfaction during off-peak hours when urgent needs are common.

What are some common challenges plumbers face when working weekend shifts, and how can they prepare for them?

Plumbers working weekend shifts often encounter urgent repair calls, such as burst pipes or major leaks, which require quick problem-solving under pressure. Additionally, they may work with limited access to suppliers or support staff, making it important to stock essential parts and tools in advance. Effective communication with customers, flexibility in scheduling, and the ability to work independently are crucial for success. By preparing thoroughly and staying organized, weekend plumbers can handle these challenges efficiently and provide reliable service.

Job description

J. Blanton Plumbing is a fast-growing residential plumbing and home services company serving the Chicagoland area.
We are looking for an ambitious, dependable, and hardworking person to join our team as a Warehouse, Fleet & Logistics Associate.
This is an entry-level position. You do not need years of warehouse or plumbing experience to be successful. We are looking for someone with a strong work ethic, good attitude, attention to detail, and a desire to learn.
For the right person, this role can be the starting point for a long-term career at J. Blanton Plumbing, with opportunities to take on additional responsibility, advance into more senior positions, and significantly grow your compensation as the company continues to grow.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Warehouse & Materials
  • Receive incoming plumbing materials, parts, equipment, and deliveries.
  • Check deliveries for accuracy and report shortages or damaged items.
  • Count inventory and help maintain accurate material quantities.
  • Stage materials and equipment for upcoming plumbing jobs.
  • Organize warehouse shelves, storage areas, and staging locations.
  • Keep the warehouse clean, safe, and organized.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment.
  • Assist with regular inventory counts.
  • Process and organize returns and unused materials.
Tools & Equipment
  • Help track company tools and equipment.
  • Record which crews or employees have equipment assigned to them.
  • Inspect equipment for damage or missing items.
  • Identify equipment that needs maintenance or repair.
  • Help coordinate repairs with vendors.
  • Follow up to make sure repaired equipment is returned and ready for use.
  • Make sure crews have the equipment they need for scheduled jobs.
Fleet & Vehicles
  • Help maintain records for company vehicles.
  • Perform basic visual inspections of vehicles.
  • Identify vehicle damage, cleanliness issues, missing equipment, or maintenance needs.
  • Help coordinate oil changes, tires, preventative maintenance, and repairs.
  • Drop off or pick up vehicles from repair facilities when needed.
  • Help track registrations, inspections, and other vehicle documentation.
  • Make sure company vehicles are properly stocked and ready for our technicians.
Logistics & Operations
  • Help move materials and equipment between the warehouse, vendors, and job sites.
  • Work with technicians and field leadership to prepare materials for upcoming jobs.
  • Help solve urgent material, equipment, and vehicle issues.
  • Keep warehouse, equipment, and vehicle records accurate and up to date.
  • Look for ways to make the warehouse cleaner, faster, and more organized.
  • Perform other warehouse, fleet, logistics, and operational duties as needed.

Experience is not the most important thing to us. Attitude, ambition, and reliability are.
The ideal candidate:
  • Is ambitious and wants an opportunity to grow.
  • Shows up on time and can be counted on.
  • Works hard and stays productive.
  • Is organized and pays attention to details.
  • Takes pride in keeping things clean and organized.
  • Is comfortable working with their hands and being physically active.
  • Can use basic computers, smartphones, and technology.
  • Communicates well with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Takes responsibility when something needs to get done.
  • Has a valid driver's license.
  • Can regularly lift, move, and handle materials and equipment in a warehouse environment.
  • Previous warehouse, plumbing, construction, fleet, automotive, delivery, or logistics experience is helpful but not required.

Who This Role Is Great For
This position is designed for someone who may be early in their career but wants more than just another hourly job.
We want someone who sees a problem and helps solve it. If materials need to be staged, you get them ready. If a truck needs service, you help make sure it gets handled. If something is missing, you help find it. If the warehouse is disorganized, you help fix it.
You will have the opportunity to learn how the warehouse, fleet, purchasing, logistics, and field operations of a large and growing plumbing company work.
As you prove yourself, there will be opportunities for increased responsibility, career advancement, and pay growth.
Benefits
We offer two full-time schedule options:
  • Monday-Friday: $20.00 per hour
  • Saturday-Wednesday: $22.00 per hour

The Saturday-Wednesday schedule receives higher hourly compensation because it includes regular weekend coverage.
This is an entry-level role with the opportunity to build a career with a fast-growing company. We are looking for people who want to grow with J. Blanton Plumbing and earn greater responsibility and compensation as they develop.
