Job Description: Journeyman Plumber – New Construction

Position Title: Journeyman Plumber – New Construction

Location: Birmingham, AL

Department: Plumbing Operations

Reports To: Plumbing Superintendent / Project Manager

Position Summary

We are seeking a licensed and experienced Journeyman Plumber to join our new construction team. The Journeyman Plumber is responsible for installing complete plumbing systems on commercial and industrial construction projects while ensuring all work meets applicable codes, project specifications, and company quality standards. The ideal candidate is a dependable professional with strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and excellence.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install underground, rough-in, top-out, and finish plumbing systems on commercial and industrial new construction projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plumbing drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Install domestic water, sanitary waste, vent, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems.
  • Install plumbing fixtures, equipment, water heaters, pumps, backflow preventers, and related plumbing components.
  • Perform field layout, measurements, and material takeoffs as needed.
  • Test plumbing systems for leaks and proper operation prior to inspections.
  • Ensure all installations comply with local, state, and national plumbing codes.
  • Coordinate work with project managers, superintendents, inspectors, subcontractors, and other trades.
  • Mentor and assist apprentice plumbers by providing training and guidance on proper installation techniques and safety practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work and communicate project progress.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with OSHA and company safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Current Journeyman Plumber License required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial or industrial new construction plumbing experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing codes, installation methods, and construction practices.
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and plumbing schematics.
  • Proficient with plumbing tools, equipment, and testing procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading crews or supervising apprentice plumbers.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with healthcare, educational, industrial, or large commercial construction projects.
  • Backflow certification or medical gas certification is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and overhead work.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
