What is a plumbers assistant?

Plumbers Assistants are entry-level workers who support licensed plumbers during installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems. Their duties typically include carrying tools, preparing materials, cleaning work areas, and assisting with tasks such as measuring, cutting, and fitting pipes. They help ensure jobs move efficiently and provide hands-on support for more complex plumbing tasks. This role is a common starting point for individuals interested in becoming licensed plumbers themselves.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plumbers assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plumbers Assistant, you need a basic understanding of plumbing systems, manual dexterity, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, pipe fittings, and safety equipment is typically required, though formal certifications are less common at this entry level. Reliability, strong communication, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills for supporting licensed plumbers and interacting with customers. These skills ensure efficient teamwork, safe work practices, and high-quality service delivery in varied job environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by a plumbers assistant, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Plumber's Assistants often encounter challenges such as working in confined spaces, dealing with unexpected leaks or equipment malfunctions, and managing a fast-paced workload during emergencies. To address these, it's important to stay organized, communicate clearly with the lead plumber, and remain adaptable when priorities shift. Building strong problem-solving skills and maintaining a positive attitude can also help navigate these common obstacles and contribute to a smooth workflow.

Job description

Lead Plumbing Installer

Bellows Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical is growing, and we're hiring an experienced Lead Plumbing Installer to join our South Bay team. We serve customers throughout Santa Cruz, Monterey, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties.

This is a full-time, field-based position for an experienced plumber who can do more than perform quality installation work. The right person must be able to take ownership of a project from start to finish, lead an assistant or small crew, and keep the job moving efficiently without constant supervision.

About the Role

As a Lead Plumbing Installer, you will be responsible for running residential and light commercial plumbing installation projects including repipes, underground sewer and water replacements, water heaters, gas piping, fixtures, and other plumbing system replacements.

A successful Lead Installer is someone who can arrive at a project, understand the scope of work, develop a plan, direct an assistant plumber, communicate with the office and customer, solve problems as they arise, and see the project through to successful completion.

This position is ideal for an experienced plumber who takes pride in craftsmanship, enjoys leading others, and wants steady installation work without the pressure of being a salesperson.

What You'll Do
  • Take ownership of assigned plumbing projects from start through final completion
  • Plan and organize the work required to complete projects safely and efficiently
  • Lead, supervise, and train an assistant plumber or small installation crew
  • Delegate work appropriately while maintaining responsibility for the finished project
  • Complete residential and light commercial plumbing installations
  • Perform whole-home and partial water, sewer, drain, and gas repipes
  • Perform underground sewer and water service replacements
  • Install water heaters, fixtures, valves, piping systems, and related plumbing equipment
  • Read plans, job scopes, and specifications and translate them into an installation plan
  • Identify jobsite challenges and develop practical solutions
  • Maintain quality control and ensure work meets Bellows standards and applicable plumbing codes
  • Keep projects on schedule and communicate promptly when conditions affect the scope or timeline
  • Maintain clean, organized, and professional job sites
  • Communicate professionally with customers, inspectors, coworkers, and the Bellows office
  • Help develop less-experienced plumbers through hands-on training and leadership
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of plumbing installation experience
  • Strong experience with repipes, underground plumbing, sewer and water services, and system replacements
  • Demonstrated ability to independently run plumbing installation projects
  • Experience supervising, training, or directing apprentices, helpers, or other plumbers
  • Ability to take responsibility for productivity, workmanship, and project completion
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read plans and understand job layouts and scopes of work
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing codes and proper installation practices
  • Professional communication skills with customers and coworkers
  • Reliable, organized, self-motivated, and accountable
  • Valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay based on experience and ability
  • Performance-based earning opportunities tied to productivity and quality
  • Company truck and gas card
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Ongoing technical and leadership training
  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Stable, year-round work
  • A professional, team-oriented work environment
Why Bellows

Bellows is looking for people who want more than just another plumbing job. We provide opportunities for experienced tradespeople to take responsibility, develop leadership skills, train the next generation of plumbers, and build a long-term career.

Our Lead Installers are trusted to run their projects and are expected to take pride in the final result. At Bellows, we believe in doing the job right, working until the job is complete, and standing behind our work-principles that are also reflected in our company core values.

If you are an experienced plumber who can lead a crew, take ownership of a project, and see a job through from beginning to end, we'd like to hear from you.
