Platform Engineering Manager information

What is a platform engineering manager?

Platform Engineering Managers are technology leaders responsible for overseeing teams that build and maintain the foundational systems and infrastructure used by software development and operations teams. They ensure that platforms are scalable, reliable, and efficient, enabling other engineers to develop, deploy, and operate applications seamlessly. Their role includes managing team members, coordinating with stakeholders, setting technical direction, and ensuring best practices in automation, security, and cloud infrastructure. They often bridge the gap between development and operations to foster a DevOps culture.

How does a platform engineering manager typically collaborate with software development and operations teams?

A Platform Engineering Manager plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between software development and operations teams. They work closely with developers to understand application requirements and with operations to ensure scalability, reliability, and security of the infrastructure. Regular collaboration includes overseeing the design and implementation of platform tools, facilitating communication during incident responses, and aligning platform capabilities with business needs. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that the platform supports efficient and reliable software delivery across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and experience leading technical teams, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, along with certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, is highly valued. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and coordinate complex projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust, scalable platforms and ensuring team alignment with organizational goals.

What is the difference between Platform Engineering Manager vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectPlatform Engineering ManagerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Science, relevant certificationsBachelor's in CS or related, certifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages platform development, strategic planningImplements CI/CD pipelines, automates deployment, supports infrastructure
Industry UsageUsed in tech companies, cloud providers, large enterprisesCommon in startups, tech firms, cloud services

The Platform Engineering Manager oversees the development and maintenance of platform infrastructure, focusing on team leadership and strategic planning. In contrast, the DevOps Engineer primarily implements automation, CI/CD pipelines, and supports deployment processes. While both roles require technical expertise and familiarity with cloud and automation tools, the manager has a broader leadership role, whereas the engineer focuses on operational tasks.

Job description

Interested in joining one of Canada's top performing asset managers? We are looking for a Manager, Platform Engineering for an existing vacancy in our IS team. At CC&L Financial Group, strong, well-integrated technology platforms help our investment, operations and client-facing teams move with confidence. We are looking for a hands-on engineering manager to lead a small platform engineering team focused on systems integration, control and automation foundations that support systematic investment operations. This is a technical leadership role for someone who still enjoys the work. You will coach engineers, set practical standards, and step into the hardest reliability, integration, data workflow and production control problems when they need deep technical judgement. CC&L is growing, and our investment technology environment is becoming more connected across portfolio, trading, middle office, back office, risk, compliance, data and vendor platforms. This role will help build common patterns for observability, orchestration, data/control workflows, system-to-system integration and safe change in a complex, regulated environment. The goal is simple: fewer repeat issues, faster recovery, clearer ownership, stronger controls and better engineering practices across teams. Our offices currently operate on a hybrid model with a combination of in-office and remote working days throughout the week.

What You Will Do

  • Lead and mentor a small team of platform system integration and reliability engineers while staying close to design and delivery.
  • Set practical engineering standards for observability, SLOs, incident response, deployment safety, infrastructure as code, production readiness and integration control.
  • Design and improve resilient system-to-system integrations across APIs, event streams, batch/file transfers, data workflows, vendor platforms and cloud or hybrid environments.
  • Build quant-grade infrastructure for systematic investment middle and back office operations, including workflow orchestration, data quality controls, reconciliations, exception handling, lineage and audit evidence.
  • Build automation and AIOps capabilities that reduce manual work, improve detection and recovery, and are safe enough for production use.
  • Take direct ownership of the most complex reliability, integration and production control problems, especially when incidents do not resolve cleanly.
  • Partner with investment, operations, risk, data, application, infrastructure and vendor teams to solve problems and make reusable patterns stick.
  • Improve observability signal quality, reducing noise and shortening time to detect and resolve incidents
  • The most difficult reliability, integration and production control issues are handled with calm, clear technical leadership.

What You Bring

  • Strong hands-on depth in at least two of: site reliability engineering, observability, platform engineering, systems integration, production data engineering, release engineering or production automation.
  • Experience building or running production observability with tools such as Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, ELK/OpenSearch, Azure Monitor or similar.
  • Good understanding of distributed systems and integration patterns, including APIs, event-driven design, batch/file processing, data flows, failure modes, idempotency and vendor workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containers, orchestration and modern deployment patterns.
  • Experience designing infrastructure, controls or automation for investment management, capital markets middle/back office operations, enterprise data/integration or another high-availability regulated environment.
  • Practical judgement on data quality, reconciliation, exception handling, lineage, audit evidence and release governance without creating unnecessary delivery friction.
  • Experience leading engineers through design review, coaching, pairing and clear feedback.
  • Experience with ServiceNow, Camunda, Temporal, Argo, Airflow, Dagster, dbt, Celonis or similar orchestration/process tools would be beneficial.
  • Exposure to systematic investing, portfolio/trading workflows, middle/back office platforms, IBOR/ABOR, enterprise data platforms or vendor platforms such as SimCorp, BlackRock Aladdin, Arcesium or similar would be nice to have.
  • Experience with Azure, Snowflake, Databricks, cloud-native monitoring, operational data platforms, automation frameworks or practical AI/AIOps use cases are a bonus.

The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000. The salary range provided reflects the base salary range for this position as required by legislation. In addition, there is an annual performance bonus which contributes to the total compensation for this position. Further questions may be directed to the HR team during the interview process.
