What does a platform engineering intern do?

A Platform Engineering Intern assists in building and maintaining the underlying systems and infrastructure that support software applications within an organization. Their responsibilities often include automating workflows, monitoring system performance, improving deployment processes, and supporting developers by ensuring the reliability and scalability of platforms. Interns typically work with technologies like cloud services, containerization tools, and CI/CD pipelines, gaining hands-on experience with modern infrastructure practices. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in DevOps, cloud engineering, or large-scale system design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform engineering intern?

To thrive as a Platform Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, proficiency in programming languages like Python or Java, and coursework or experience in systems engineering. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), containerization tools (like Docker or Kubernetes), and version control systems (such as Git) is often required. Problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are soft skills that set exceptional interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting complex platform infrastructure, collaborating with engineering teams, and rapidly adapting to new technologies.
