Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineer information

What does a plastic injection mold design engineer do?

A Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing molds used to manufacture plastic parts through the injection molding process. They work closely with product designers and manufacturing teams to ensure the molds are efficient, durable, and capable of producing high-quality components. Their tasks include creating detailed 3D models, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting design issues to optimize production performance and minimize costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plastic injection mold design engineer?

To thrive as a Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and CAD design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in industry-standard CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), mold flow analysis tools, and familiarity with manufacturing processes are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing efficient, high-quality molds that meet production standards and client requirements.

What are some common challenges a plastic injection mold design engineer faces during the mold design process?

Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring the mold's manufacturability while maintaining tight tolerances, selecting appropriate materials to withstand high pressures and temperatures, and predicting potential issues like warping or sink marks. Collaborating closely with manufacturing teams and product designers is crucial to address design-for-manufacturability concerns and optimize cycle times. These engineers must also stay updated on the latest CAD software and simulation tools to efficiently iterate and validate mold designs before production.

What is the difference between Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineer vs Plastic Mold Maintenance Technician?

AspectPlastic Injection Mold Design EngineerPlastic Mold Maintenance Technician
Primary RoleDesigns and develops new injection molds for manufacturingMaintains, repairs, and troubleshoots existing molds
Skills & CertificationsCAD proficiency, mold design certifications, engineering backgroundMechanical skills, troubleshooting certifications, hands-on experience
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering labs, manufacturing plantsManufacturing floors, maintenance workshops
Industry UsageUsed by mold design and manufacturing companiesEmployed by injection molding facilities for ongoing mold upkeep

The Plastic Injection Mold Design Engineer focuses on creating new molds through design and engineering, while the Plastic Mold Maintenance Technician specializes in maintaining and repairing existing molds to ensure smooth production. Both roles are essential in the injection molding industry but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work environment.

Job description

Position Description: This is an extraordinary opportunity to come in at the ground floor of a fast growing, ultra-high impact CleanTech startup. We at Blue Frontier are racing to solve arguably the biggest sustainability problem in the world using disruptive technology and business models. Air conditioning is the fastest growing use of electricity in the US and globally. If present trends continue, by 2050 air conditioning electricity consumption will be bigger than the combined electricity consumption of China and India today!Blue Frontiers AC system combines dew-point-style sensible cooling with liquid desiccant dehumidification to reduce electricity use by up to 90%. The desiccant is recharged and stored when electricity is the lowest cost or cleanest, and later used to deliver cooling when electricity is costly or derived from non-renewable sources. These features enable our system to solve an array of todays largest sustainability problems from the Duck Curve to peak load management, from humidity control to integration of intermittent renewable resources.
Working in the Product Development department and reporting to the VP of Product Development, the Mechanical Design Engineer will implement engineering design solutions and processes that will enhance the performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, durability, and quality of our systems.
To the ideal candidate, this position is an opportunity to create products with the potential to literally change the world for the better. If you are creative, personable, highly responsible, passionate, intelligent, and driven, you should join us.
Roles and Responsibilities
Mechanical Design
Develop detailed mechanical part and assembly designs and drawings using SolidWorks
Conduct engineering analysis including structural strength, material selection, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, electrical power consumption, manufacturing methods, controls, etc., to arrive at designs that meet or exceed established expectations

Develop manufacturing methods and processes, and enhance manufacturability of designs
Test and develop test protocols for evaluating prototypes
Provide accurate BOMs to the Manufacturing department
Project Management
Must be able to manage tasks and projects with significant amount of autonomy
Must be an excellent verbal communicator and presenter
Skills & CapabilitiesEducation & Experience
3-5+ years relevant industry experience, with emphasis on product development of highly engineered systems and hardware.
Experience taking product from design to manufacturing
BS in Mechanical Engineering from a top 100 university
Experience engineering for advanced air conditioning, thin-plate heat exchangers or other stacked-plate type devices such as fuel cells or batteries would be a plus
