General Purpose: The purpose of the Maintenance Apprentice position is to perform maintenance duties in a professional, skilled, and competent manner while participating in team efforts to develop and implement effective solutions to maintenance and operational challenges. The apprentice is expected to maintain a positive learning attitude, actively seek opportunities to develop new skills, and be receptive to coaching, guidance, and constructive feedback from maintenance personnel and other team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to all Energy Control Procedures (ECPs) and the Lock, Tag, Try (LTT) system. Demonstrate respect for potential hazards within the manufacturing environment and participate in required training and process audits.
• Communicate effectively in the primary language used within the plant.
• Demonstrate basic computer proficiency, including email, spreadsheets, and word processing applications.
• Develop and maintain working knowledge of SAP as the maintenance management system.
• Learn and follow safe rigging practices and procedures.
• Operate forklifts safely and maintain required licensing and certifications.
• Learn fundamental troubleshooting techniques, including problem analysis and root cause identification. Assist in reducing downtime and promoting effective problem-solving methods rather than trial-and-error repairs.
• Understand the basic principles required to consistently manufacture quality shingles, including critical product characteristics, key process variables, and customer requirements.
• Develop an understanding of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) concepts, including their individual and business benefits, key performance metrics, and operational focus areas.
• Assist with the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment using approved methods and procedures.
• Lubricate equipment as required using appropriate oils, greases, and related products.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks in accordance with established procedures and checklists.
• Follow all safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices, including the use of sound judgment and common-sense safety awareness.
• Learn to read, interpret, and apply information from blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other technical references.
• Participate in the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program, including ownership and care of assigned equipment and completion of related training requirements.
• Attend and actively participate in maintenance training programs to support continued growth and development of mechanical skills.
• Safely use a variety of hand tools, power tools, forklifts, hoists, man lifts, oil removal equipment, and other support equipment after receiving proper training.
• Inspect plant equipment to identify potential issues before equipment failures occur.
• Maintain clean and organized work areas and comply with good housekeeping practices before, during, and after each job.
• Comply with all environmental policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain a positive learning attitude and actively seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and maintenance skills. Be receptive to coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback from maintenance personnel and other team members.

Education or Formal Training

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience

Must possess a basic understanding of industrial equipment, maintenance principles, and machinery maintenance practices. Must demonstrate fundamental troubleshooting abilities and familiarity with industrial safety standards and practices.

Working Environment

Work is performed in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment. Conditions may include exposure to hot temperatures during warm weather and cold temperatures during cold weather. Noise levels are consistently high. Employees may be exposed to sand, granules, dust, and other airborne particles during normal operations.
