What does a planning engineer intern do?

A Planning Engineer Intern supports senior planning engineers and project managers by assisting in the development, monitoring, and updating of project schedules. Their tasks may include data collection, analyzing project timelines, preparing progress reports, and using scheduling software like Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project. The internship provides hands-on experience in project planning, risk assessment, and resource allocation, helping interns understand the fundamentals of project management in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or engineering.

What types of projects and tasks can a planning engineer intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Planning Engineer Intern, you will typically assist with creating and updating project schedules, analyzing workflow processes, and supporting the coordination of resources to meet project deadlines. You may also be involved in collecting progress data, preparing reports, and working closely with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to ensure timely project execution. This hands-on experience provides a valuable introduction to project controls and scheduling tools, while exposing you to the collaborative nature of engineering teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planning engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planning Engineer Intern, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, analytical thinking, and familiarity with project planning concepts—often supported by progress toward a degree in engineering or construction management. Proficiency with software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, and AutoCAD, as well as basic knowledge of scheduling and reporting tools, is highly valuable. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These skills are crucial for supporting project timelines, ensuring accurate data analysis, and fostering teamwork in complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Planning Engineer Intern vs Planning Engineer?

Job description

Pennoni is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern to join our team and support transportation planning, multimodal mobility, traffic safety, and public infrastructure planning projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in transportation planning to gain hands-on exposure to planning studies, data analysis, mapping, public agency coordination, transportation policy, and project documentation while working closely with experienced planners, engineers, and project managers.

In this role, you will support project teams through multiple stages of transportation planning assignments, including research, data collection, analysis, report preparation, exhibits, and planning-level recommendations for communities, agencies, and private clients.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist planners and engineers with transportation planning studies, corridor studies, multimodal planning efforts, traffic safety evaluations, and related public infrastructure projects.
  • Support data collection, research, and analysis related to traffic volumes, crash history, roadway characteristics, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, transit access, parking, land use, and mobility needs.
  • Help prepare maps, graphics, tables, presentation materials, planning memoranda, and written summaries for client meetings, public outreach, agency coordination, and project reports.
  • Review local, regional, and state transportation planning guidance, comprehensive plans, small area plans, bicycle and pedestrian plans, transit plans, and applicable design or policy documents.
  • Contribute to planning-level recommendations by organizing technical information, documenting project assumptions, summarizing existing conditions, and supporting alternatives analysis.
  • Work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment under the guidance of experienced planners, engineers, and project managers.
  • Additional tasks may be assigned, as needed.

Required Qualifications:

Enrollment in an Urban and Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Public Policy, or related academic program. Candidates should have completed or be actively pursuing coursework related to transportation planning, urban planning, transportation engineering, GIS, data analysis, public policy, land use, or related topics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior internship, academic project, volunteer experience, or work experience related to transportation planning, urban planning, traffic engineering, GIS, public outreach, or public infrastructure is a plus.
  • Familiarity with GIS software, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF applications, Bluebeam Revu, or related planning and visualization tools.
  • Exposure to transportation planning concepts, multimodal transportation, complete streets, traffic safety, transit planning, land use planning, public engagement, or transportation data analysis is helpful.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, writing ability, and willingness to learn in a collaborative project environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, ask questions, take direction, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Why Pennoni?

Founded more than 50 years ago, Pennoni is a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm with a long-standing commitment to delivering practical solutions for public and private clients. As a Transportation Planning Intern, you will gain meaningful exposure to planning studies, transportation data, multimodal mobility, agency coordination, public-facing materials, and project documentation while supporting projects that help shape communities and infrastructure throughout the region.
