Job description

Role
This role will support day to day safety, hourly workforce leadership, and operations of the Paper Machine 1&2 and Additives & Stock Prep Departments. The individual in this role will work within the operations team to continuously improve health and safety performance, environmental compliance, production, quality metrics, and operating cost. These activities will require leading people, processes and equipment.
The scope of the PM1&2 / A&SP Supervisor will include the Paper Machine No.1, Paper Machine No.2, all Additive & Stock Prep areas (PCC Plant, Quatropulpers, Starch Making, Black Shed, Bldg 42). Additional responsibilities on the off shifts include the Old Mill Finishing (No.1 Capper, Sheeter, Core Cutting and Old Mill loading docks).
Role Expectations
  • Primary focus is to lead and direct people
  • Demonstrates safe behavior and work practices providing safety oversite to the shift crew.
  • Ensures the crew follows all mill and job safety requirements and standard operating procedures.
  • Promptly investigates safety, fire, and environmental incidents. Completes and submits an investigation report prior to the end of the shift.
  • Ensures proper operation and management of processes and equipment to meet paper machine needs and environmental compliance requirements with ISO 14001.
  • Monitors mill operations KPIs and directs the crew to meet quality, operating, process, and production targets/objectives. Secures appropriate resources to return the process/operation to target when deviations occur.
  • Follows up on team member training plans and provides feedback to area supervision
  • Responsible for shift administration of mill lock out policies & procedures, confined space entry, hot work, and all other safety and policy/procedures.
  • Works closely with other on-shift supervisors to coordinate mill activities to achieve business results.
  • Expected to challenge status quo and strive to work with crews to continuously improve crew and operating performance.
  • Utilizes performance management and administers progressive discipline on shift
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Set expectations of the crew and follow up
  • Be able to work in a team environment

Essential Duties and Specific Responsibilities
  • Safety:
    • Ensures and is accountable for personal compliance with Plant safety and Departmental safety rules
    • Enforces and is accountable for shift personnel compliance with Plant safety and Departmental safety rules
    • Completes necessary reporting for all safety incidents and injuries

  • Environmental:
    • Ensures personal compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental procedures and Process Safety Management procedures
    • Enforces shift personnel compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental procedures and Process Safety Management procedures
    • Completes necessary reporting for near miss incidents, public complaints, and environmental incidents

  • Production Control / Quality:
    • Supervises personnel and operations.
    • Assists employees in solving problems and directs operating parameter adjustments to meet established specifications.
    • Recommends improvements to systems, processes, and procedures to improve production
    • Communicates changes in production to personnel
    • Records production deviations from standard levels with explanations
    • Records equipment downtime with explanations
    • Coordinates efforts with other departmental shift supervisors

  • Maintenance:
    • Inspects equipment with shift personnel and writes work orders for equipment repair
    • Coordinates equipment repair with Operations Superintendent, Maintenance personnel, and shift personnel
    • Calls in Maintenance personnel on off shifts to repair equipment
    • Assist, Develop, Coordinate with Operator Basic Care

  • Personnel:
    • Fills personnel vacancies in order to maintain operations
    • Performs necessary Kronos approvals
    • Prepares absentee, time, and other reports relating to employees as required
    • Maintain good employee relations
    • Manage other duties and responsibilities as may arise during shift
    • Coordinate Employee Annual Training
    • Make up, issue, and maintain Monthly work schedule for hourly employees, in accordance with the CBA and side agreements.
    • Manage 6S projects
    • Assist with training of employee's in new positions.
  • Systems Procedures:
    • Established work procedures
    • Established ISO 14001 procedures
    • Process Safety Management procedures
    • MSDS policy and procedures
    • Lock/Out Tag out policy and procedures
    • Complete thorough shift turnover and other shift reporting as required

Requirements
  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Sciences or High School Diploma/GED and 2 years of equivalent job experience.

  • Competencies
    • Ability to apply mathematical concepts and operations.
    • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
    • Strong communication skills needed both internally and externally at senior-management levels. Provides expertise to teams, both internally and externally.
    • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from operators, maintenance, managers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
    • Ability to write technical documents and reports in prescribed style and format.
    • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or regulatory agencies.
    • Troubleshoot problems to resolution.

  • Computer Skills
    • MS Office Suite proficiency
    • SAP familiarity a plus

  • Work Environment -
    • Varies from office setting to loud, hot & humid manufacturing environment both indoor and outdoor. Role requires the ability to travel throughout the facility while using stairs, ladders, elevated platforms, and elevators.
    • Must be able to maintain SCBA qualifications and use
    • 24/7 work schedule with rotating shifts.
