As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for pipe inspection in Dallas, TX is $16.54, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.48 and $17.84 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is pipe inspection?

Pipe inspection refers to the process of examining pipelines—such as those used in water, oil, gas, or sewage systems—to assess their condition, detect defects, and ensure they meet safety and regulatory standards. Inspectors use various techniques, including visual inspections, ultrasonic testing, cameras, or robotic devices, to identify issues like corrosion, leaks, or blockages. Regular pipe inspection helps prevent costly failures, ensures environmental safety, and prolongs the lifespan of the piping infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in pipe inspection and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in pipe inspection often encounter challenges such as accessing confined or hazardous spaces, dealing with varying pipe materials and diameters, and accurately identifying hidden defects like corrosion or blockages. To address these, inspectors typically use specialized equipment such as cameras, ultrasonic devices, and robotic tools to ensure thorough evaluations while minimizing safety risks. Regular training and adherence to safety protocols are also crucial, as is clear communication with maintenance teams to coordinate repairs and follow-up inspections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pipe inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pipe Inspector, you need a solid understanding of piping systems, materials, and industry codes, often backed by relevant certifications such as API 570 or ASNT NDT. Familiarity with technical tools like ultrasonic testing devices, borescopes, and inspection management software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help inspectors identify issues and convey findings effectively. These skills are crucial for ensuring the safety, compliance, and reliability of critical piping infrastructure.

What is the difference between Pipe Inspection vs Pipe Welding?

AspectPipe InspectionPipe Welding

Work EnvironmentInspection sites, industrial plants, pipelinesConstruction sites, fabrication shops, industrial plants
Industry UsageQuality control, safety assuranceFabrication, installation, repair of pipes
Common Search IntentInspect pipelines for defectsJoin pipes through welding

While both roles involve working with pipes, Pipe Inspection focuses on assessing the integrity and safety of pipelines using non-destructive testing methods, whereas Pipe Welding involves joining pipes together through welding processes. Both require specialized certifications and are essential in pipeline construction and maintenance, but they serve different functions within the industry.

How do you become a pipe inspection?

To become a pipe inspector, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training in pipeline systems, safety procedures, and inspection techniques. Many inspectors obtain certifications such as the API 570 or API 653, and gain experience through apprenticeships or on-the-job training in the field.

How much do pipe inspectors make?

Pipe inspectors typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Skilled inspectors with specialized knowledge of inspection tools and safety standards can earn higher wages, especially in industrial or hazardous environments.

What is the role of a pipe inspector?

A pipe inspector is responsible for examining pipelines to ensure their integrity, safety, and compliance with standards. They use tools such as ultrasonic testers and cameras, often working in challenging environments, and may require certifications like API or ASNT. Their work helps prevent leaks, failures, and environmental hazards.
