ย General Information/Job Summary
Under direction, the pipefitter performs work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of process facilities and systems, high pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps, boilers and furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment and steam operated equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with accepted trade practices; may be called on to do routine welding; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does related work as required.

Lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and maintain piping, piping systems, and equipment for steam, hot water, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems. Apply knowledge of system operation, building plans, and work drawings in performing tasks. Usually work with large pipes that are frequently secured by means of flanges (rim or collar) and/or welding.
Responsibilities/Competencies
- Uses basicย knowledgeย ofย regulationsย andย requirements.ย Determines methods and materials needed to accomplishย assignedย tasks.
- Prepares and/orย worksย from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets in accordย withย approvedย trade practices. ย Interpretsย graphicย symbolsย on pipingย drawings.
- Laysย out, assembles,ย installs,ย and maintains pipeย systems,ย pipe supports, and relatedย hydraulicย and pneumaticย equipmentย for steam, hotย water,ย heating,ย cooling,ย lubricating,ย sprinkling,ย and industrial production and processingย systems,ย applyingย knowledgeย ofย systemย operation, andย followingย blueprints.
- Installs andย repairsย pipingย systemsย using flanged,ย screwed,ย bell andย spigot,ย compression,ย andย soldered joints.
- Perform lockout and tag procedures to secure andย deactivateย equipment,ย and checkย localย points to ensure properย lockoutย procedures are used.
- Inspectsย workย site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipeย willย not cause structuralย weakness.
- Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine. Cuts pipe,ย usingย saws,ย pipeย cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine. Threads pipe by hand or byย powerย drivenย equipment.
- Dismantlesย equipmentย orย devicesย toย gainย access to andย removeย defectiveย parts or components. Enters safeย vessels,ย towers,ย and columns forย installationย and maintenance ofย traysย andย cleaning.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks thatย requireย manuallyย movingย materials, tools, andย equipmentย and using hand tools andย powerย tools.
- Performsย workย area clean-up and safety-related duties.
- Completesย paperworkย documenting repair and maintenanceย activities.ย Givesย suitableย assignmentsย to helpers.
- Worksย in associationย withย all crafts (electrician,ย welder,ย carpenter, orย painter)ย whenย conditions,ย schedule, orย workloadย warrantsย or as directed by management.
- Secures pipes to structureย withย brackets, clamps, and hangers, using hand tools andย powerย tools.
- Requiresย workingย in operating facilities andย observingย and abiding byย additionalย safetyย policiesย and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Four (4)ย yearsย ofย experienceย inย workย involvingย aย varietyย ofย layout,ย installation,ย and maintenance tasks
- Possessย a validย driversโย licenseย withย aย goodย drivingย record.
