Job Summary
Welds a variety of metal surfaces or pipe using various types of welding equipment. Welds shell plating, fabricated cast or forged components according to specifications for vessels, tanks or other structural assemblies. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Qualification Standards
Three years experience in welding, knowledge of welding procedures, and various types of welding equipment, proficient in flat, vertical, overhead, and horizontal arc, SMAW and flux-core, tig welding and air arc skills. Must pass NASSCO's plate test in all positions and pipe test on 6G restricted fix position using FCAW and GTAW processes. Must be certified to operate high reaching equipment. Must have ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift. Must comprehend written and verbal instructions (in English). Must be able to hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.
Essential Job Tasks
1. Set up tools, welding equipment and supplies at job site
2. Burns pipe or penetrations.
3. Tacks and welds pipe.
4. Cleans weld area; sweeps and removes scrap.
5. Other job duties as may be assigned relevant to the trade.
Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids
Welding leads, welding machinery, ventilation hose, tool bag, ladder, grinders, mini grid, burning leads, cutting torches, chipping hammers, welding stingers, and personal protective equipment.
Physical/Mental Involvement
Frequent to continuous lifting of welding equipment. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee's work area.
Marginal Job Tasks
General housekeeping in work areas. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.
Environmental Factors
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
PAY SCALE
$35.36 - $38.71
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
