What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PIP Insurance Claims Adjuster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PIP (Personal Injury Protection) Insurance Claims Adjuster, you need a solid understanding of insurance policies, claims processing, and relevant state regulations, often supported by a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with claims management software and, in some states, adjuster licensing or certifications are typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, empathy, and effective communication help you assess claims accurately and support customers through stressful situations. These skills ensure claims are processed efficiently, fairly, and in compliance with legal standards, maintaining trust and minimizing risk for the insurer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in PIP insurance claims handling?

Professionals handling PIP (Personal Injury Protection) insurance claims often encounter challenges such as managing high caseloads, interpreting complex medical documentation, and ensuring compliance with varying state regulations. Balancing timely claim resolutions while maintaining thorough investigations can be demanding, especially when coordinating with medical providers, attorneys, and policyholders. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to navigate these challenges and provide quality customer service.

What is PIP insurance?

PIP insurance, or Personal Injury Protection insurance, is a type of car insurance coverage that pays for medical expenses and, in some cases, lost wages and other damages, regardless of who is at fault in an accident. It is often required in no-fault insurance states, where each driver's own insurance covers their injuries. PIP can cover you, your passengers, and sometimes pedestrians involved in the accident. The specific benefits and limits vary by state and policy, so it's important to review your coverage details with your insurer.

  • Passionate about the customer experience
  • You're empathetic and patient with everyone you interact with
  • Driven by a sense of urgency (without working around the clock)
  • Creative in finding the right resolution that serves the insured's best interest
  • You're comfortable with conflict-see it as conversational, not adversarial
  • Curious about the whole story so you can make the right decisions early
  • Anti-status quo-you don't just wish things were different, you make them different
  • A strong communicator
  • You have a sense of humor (claims are hard enough as it is!

What You'll Do
  • Provide high-quality customer service by handling calls, filing claims, and resolving requests
  • You'll investigate PIP/MP claims to determine coverage, injury extent, and evaluate medical billing
  • Gather documentation, interview parties, explain coverage, and resolve medical expenses
  • Assess claim validity and determine appropriate settlement amounts or next steps
  • You'll manage claim inventory and establish/adjust reserves throughout the claim lifecycle
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations, policy provisions, and SOPs
  • Communicate regularly with claimants, policyholders, attorneys, and medical providers
  • You'll prepare thorough claim reports with investigation findings and decision rationale
  • Provide input for continuous improvement of claims guidelines and processes
  • Oversee outside service providers and work with client counsel to resolve claims
  • Engage in learning opportunities to build your claims expertise

What You Bring
  • 3+ years of experience in Personal Injury Protection (don't let a lack of a degree stop you from applying if you have the experience!)
  • Experience handling NJ (required) and at least one other state to include MI, FL, NY, TX and/or KY
  • Preferred: Commercial, rideshare, or trucking policy experience
  • You understand subrogation referrals
  • Knowledge of Bodily Injury and coordination of benefits between PIP and UM/UIM
  • Arbitration and/or formal PIP/MP litigation experience
  • You must have an active adjuster license in your home state or designated home state (if your state does not offer one) and be willing to obtain all required licenses within 60 days
  • Strong knowledge of state regulations and policy provisions
  • Eager for continuous learning and professional development
  • Willing to travel for client and claims needs

Benefits
  • Generous health-insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, & dental
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching
  • Competitive PTO policy - we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy, and energized!
  • Generous family leave policy after 8 months of continuous work
  • Work from anywhere to facilitate your work life balance
  • Apple laptop, large second monitor, and other quality-of-life equipment you may want. Technology is something that should make your life easier, not harder!

Additionally, we will
  • Listen to your feedback to enhance and improve upon the long-standing challenges of an adjuster and the claims role
  • Work toward reducing and eliminating all the administrative work from an adjuster role
  • Foster a culture of empathy, transparency, and empowerment in a remote-first environment
