Work EnvironmentLeads flight operations, makes final decisions, responsible for safetyAssists Pilot In Command, manages navigation and communication tasks
Roles & ResponsibilitiesOverall flight responsibility, decision-making authoritySupports Pilot In Command, shares flying duties

The Pilot In Command holds the primary responsibility for flight safety and decision-making, while the Co-Pilot assists and shares flying duties. Both roles require similar certifications, but the Pilot In Command has ultimate authority and accountability during flights.

What are the responsibilities of a pilot in command?

A Pilot In Command (PIC) is the person legally responsible for the operation and safety of an aircraft during flight. The PIC has final authority over all decisions related to the flight, including navigation, communication, and emergency procedures. This role involves pre-flight planning, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, and managing the crew and passengers. The PIC must also assess weather conditions, check the aircraft's mechanical status, and coordinate with air traffic control to ensure a safe and efficient flight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pilot in command, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pilot In Command, you need advanced aeronautical knowledge, an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) license, and significant flight hours. Mastery of avionics systems, flight management computers, and navigation tools is standard, along with recurrent simulator training. Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills are essential for managing crew and ensuring passenger safety. These skills and qualifications are crucial for safe, efficient flight operations and effective handling of in-flight challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by a pilot in command during multi-crew operations?

As a Pilot In Command (PIC) in multi-crew operations, one of the main challenges is effective communication and decision-making under time pressure. The PIC must balance delegating tasks while maintaining overall responsibility for flight safety and compliance with regulations. Managing workload, especially during irregular operations or emergencies, requires strong leadership and trust within the crew. Additionally, adapting to varying personalities and experience levels among crew members is essential to ensure smooth collaboration and safe outcomes.

What does a pilot in command do?

A pilot in command is responsible for the safety and operation of the aircraft during flight. They make decisions, navigate, communicate with air traffic control, and ensure compliance with regulations, often holding certifications such as an Airline Transport Pilot license. The pilot in command oversees crew and passenger safety throughout the flight.

How much do pilots in command make?

Pilots in command, also known as captains, typically earn between $80,000 and $200,000 annually, depending on factors such as airline, experience, aircraft type, and flight hours. Experienced captains flying for major airlines or on long-haul international routes tend to earn higher salaries, often supplemented by benefits and per diem allowances.

UAS Test Pilot

Flock Safety

Atlanta, GA โ€ข On-site

$65K - $90K/yr

Full-time

This job post hasย expired today.ย Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

The Problem
As Flock accelerates the deployment of Drone as First Responder systems, operational reliability and performance under diverse flight conditions are essential to support real-time public safety operations. Rigorously testing hardware integrations and evaluating custom flight behavior requires dedicated flight leadership in the field. You will pilot test flights, troubleshoot physical and system performance, and evaluate raw flight data so our airborne platforms operate with absolute precision.
What You'll Own
  • Serve as Pilot in Command for experimental UAS flight testing, field evaluations, and mission simulations across varied weather conditions.
  • Evaluate aircraft performance, hardware stability, and software integration during active test routines.
  • Perform physical diagnostics, system troubleshooting, and post-flight evaluations on complex drone hardware and software systems.
  • Document flight metrics, maintain precise flight logs, and deliver technical write-ups to engineering teams.
  • Partner with technical stakeholders to refine flight testing procedures and implement risk management standards.

What This Role is Not
  • This isn't a desk-bound or purely simulated testing role, you'll be outdoors in field operations over 70% of the time.
  • This is not a routine commercial piloting job, you'll actively test experimental systems, diagnose hardware issues, and stress-test custom UAV technology.
  • This isn't a remote position, you will be on-site at our facilities in Atlanta with up to 25% domestic travel.

What You Bring
  • Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and a thorough understanding of FAA regulations and safety protocols.
  • Practical flight experience as a pilot in command, specifically within experimental UAS development and diverse multirotor or fixed-wing platforms.
  • Hands-on proficiency in drone diagnostics, troubleshooting physical hardware, and assessing software interactions during flight.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods during outdoor field testing and lift up to 55 lbs of operational hardware and gear.
  • Clear communication skills to translate complex flight anomalies and data into actionable engineering reports.
  • Experience with custom flight control systems or experimental aircraft telemetry is a plus.

Compensation
In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $65,000 and $95,000 as well as Flock Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in depth with you during our first chat.
Why Flock
Every community deserves to be safe. Flock builds the technology that makes that real: last year we supported over 1 million criminal investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people. We're 1,700 people building the impossible with over $1B in funding, and the expectations are high on purpose. If you want a role where the stakes are real and the pace matches, this is it.
Some problems get solved faster in the same room, so we prioritize candidates in Atlanta and Boston. Hub-based roles mean real in-person time with your coworkers. Remote roles exist, and when a posting is open to remote work, it says so.
Building the impossible takes every kind of mind. Flock is an equal opportunity employer, and we know the best solutions come from diverse perspectives, experiences, and skills working together with mutual respect. Everyone is welcome to apply. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, email recruiting@flocksafety.com; your information stays confidential and is used only to arrange the right accommodation for your interviews.
On compensation: we pay fairly for the work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education, training, and market indicators. The range in this posting covers base salary only and doesn't include equity, sales bonus plans where applicable, or benefits. The range may be adjusted over time, and this posting may span more than one career level.
One last thing: all legitimate communication from Flock comes from an email ending in @flocksafety.com or noreply@ashbyhq.com.
