How much do piece work jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 26, 2026, the average hourly pay for piece work in Tennessee is $19.01, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.34 and $20.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is piece work?

Piece work is when an employer pays a worker a fixed-rate per completion of duties rather than an hourly rate. This method is commonly used for those who work at home, such as with freelance writers. Rather than documenting time worked, a previously agreed upon payment is received when the contracted writing is delivered. In some manufacturing factories, workers assemble a product and must meet a quota while getting paid per finished unit. This method of payment encourages efficient production and time management by the worker.

What is piece work?

Piece work is a type of employment where workers are paid based on the number of units or pieces they produce, rather than receiving an hourly wage or a fixed salary. This payment method is common in industries such as manufacturing, textiles, and agriculture. The more pieces an employee completes, the more they earn, which can incentivize higher productivity. However, it's important for employers to ensure that piece rates comply with minimum wage laws and fair labor standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in piece work, and why are they important?

To thrive in piece work, you need manual dexterity, attention to detail, and the ability to consistently meet quality and quantity targets, often without formal qualifications. Familiarity with relevant machinery, production tools, or time-tracking systems is typically required depending on the industry. Self-motivation, time management, and reliability are critical soft skills for maintaining productivity and meeting deadlines. These abilities are essential because they directly impact earnings, job security, and the efficiency of the overall production process.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working on a piece work basis, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge for piece work employees is maintaining consistent income, as pay is directly tied to output, which can fluctuate due to changes in workload or process efficiency. Additionally, piece workers may experience physical fatigue or repetitive strain, especially in production or manual labor settings. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop efficient work habits, take regular breaks, and communicate with supervisors about workflow or ergonomic concerns. Many organizations also encourage collaboration among piece workers to share best practices and support each other's productivity.

Job description

Custom Architectural Welder & Fabricator – Premium Stairs, Railings & Metalwork

Location: Nashville, TN Area

Pay: $25–$40/hr based on experience (with overtime + skill-based bonuses – consistent full-time hours available!)

We're growing! With a brand-new shop expansion underway, we're adding **2–3 more talented team members** to handle our increasing volume of high-end, showcase-quality projects. Think stunning floating staircases, elegant spiral and mono-stringer designs, sleek glass and cable railings, ornate metal railings, and one-of-a-kind architectural metal features for luxury residences and upscale commercial builds.

What You'll Do Day-to-Day:

- Perform precise MIG welding (short-arc and spray) on mild steel, stainless, and aluminum for railings, stringers, and custom pieces

- Assemble, fit, tack, and complete weldments using detailed blueprints or shop drawings

- Grind, smooth, and prepare surfaces for flawless powder coat or mirror-polish finishes

- Layout and build intricate angles, curves, radii, and complex geometries for stairs and railings

- Run essential shop machinery: shear, press brake, ironworker, band saws, and standard fab tools

- Handle occasional site visits for measurements, deliveries, or installs (field/construction background is a bonus)

Must-Have Skills & Traits:

- Solid track record in custom or architectural welding/fabrication (experience with stairs & railings is a big plus)

- Clean, high-quality MIG beads on steel; stainless and aluminum a big plus – consistency matters

- Confident blueprint reading and precise layout for challenging angles and measurements

- Dependable, focused on details, professional attitude, and strong work ethic (show up on time, ready every day)

Skills That Set You Apart (and Boost Your Rate/Priority):

- TIG experience on stainless or aluminum and other exotic metals

- Deep understanding of stair design – floating systems, mono-stringers, complex geometry

- Real-world install experience (we handle our own field installs)

- Woodworking knowledge or ability to assemble metal/wood treads – we run an in-house wood shop, so if you're primarily a welder but open to helping out with wood tasks during slower fab periods, that's perfect too!

- Bilingual (English/Spanish) – ¡Hablamos español y damos la bienvenida a todos!

What You Get:

- Top-tier competitive pay, direct deposit on a weekly basis

- Paid holidays (after 90 days)

- 1 week paid vacation (after 1 year)

- Steady, year-round work with no seasonal slowdowns

- Team-oriented shop that values quality craftsmanship and pride in every project

Not fully at senior/lead level yet? No problem – we're also bringing on **fitters, finishers/grinders, install assistants, and wood shop helpers**. Please mention “Helper/Entry-Level Position” when you apply.
