Picture Head information

What is a picture head?

A Picture Head is a term used in the film and post-production industry to refer to a company or individual responsible for managing and executing the picture editorial and finishing process. This includes editing, color correction, visual effects, and preparing the final version of a film or television project for distribution. Picture Head professionals work closely with directors, producers, and other creative teams to ensure the final visuals meet artistic and technical standards. Their expertise is crucial in bringing the creative vision to life on screen.

What are common challenges picture heads face when managing multiple post-production projects simultaneously?

Picture Heads often oversee several post-production projects at once, requiring strong organizational and communication skills to keep everything on track. Common challenges include coordinating schedules among editors, colorists, and VFX teams, managing client feedback within tight deadlines, and ensuring that each project maintains high quality standards. Balancing creative vision with budget constraints is also a frequent hurdle. Effective Picture Heads regularly prioritize tasks, foster clear communication across departments, and proactively address issues to keep projects moving smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a picture head, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Picture Head (Head of Post-Production or Picture Department), you need expertise in film editing, color grading, project management, and a strong understanding of the post-production process, typically supported by a degree in film or media and significant industry experience. Proficiency with editing software like Avid, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and familiarity with asset management systems are essential. Leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for coordinating teams, managing deadlines, and ensuring creative vision alignment. These abilities ensure seamless project delivery, high-quality output, and effective team collaboration in a fast-paced production environment.

Job description

About Rune
Rune Technologies builds mission-critical software for military logistics and sustainment. Our flagship product is TyrOS, an AI-enabled logistics command and control platform that gives commanders a single, real-time operating picture of their sustainment fight, from inventory and distribution to medical and operational planning, even in degraded and contested environments.
We're not a traditional defense contractor. We're a small, fast-moving team that combines deep operational experience in and with the DoD with the software discipline of the best product companies, and we apply that combination to a customer set that desperately needs it. We stay close to our users by embedding directly with military units during exercises and rotations, and we ship constantly based on what we learn.
The U.S. military and its allies face a real logistics modernization problem. We're building the software to solve it.
About the Role
As Head of Mission Success, you will lead the deployment of Rune products and lead all aspects of programmatic execution for the company. You will be responsible for programmatic timelines, synchronization across efforts, staffing, and coordination across cloud and edge environments with customers from the Joint Force and allied nations.
You must have a technical aptitude as well as a deep understanding of military sustainment, coupled with demonstrated leadership experience of teams in high-stress and high-stakes environments. This is a customer-facing role where you will be engaging with senior military leaders to ensure alignment and buy-in. This is a role with deep cross-functional expectations, coordinating and working closely with the company's Head of Software and Head of Growth ensuring Mission Success, Growth, Engineering, and Product are synchronized across all deployment and execution efforts. Rune's Head of Mission Success reports directly to the company's CEO and is an integral part of the leadership team as Rune scales.
You will lead and grow a team of dedicated Mission Managers leading active efforts across the Joint Force, while remaining deeply hands-on in implementation and technical execution. You will define Rune's programmatic direction, set standards for performance and execution, and lead deployment of teams and systems globally.
What You'll Do
  • Work side-by-side with our customers and senior military leaders to understand their unique challenges and represent the customer through your Mission Success team to continue shaping product development and direction.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Rune Engineering, Product, Growth and Executive teams to ensure each team is engaged and working towards customer success.
  • Bring a deep understanding of military logistics operations to the Rune team, using your background and skillset to further expand and refine Rune product offerings.
  • Be comfortable leading a growing team of dedicated Mission Managers, providing clear guidance, direction, expectations and mentorship to the team as it scales.
  • Be a do-er who wants to understand customer problems and highly technical solutions to those problems and is not afraid to dive in personally to solve problems and ensure success.
  • Lead all programmatic deployment of Rune technology and products for testing, evaluation and operational use at government facilities and military bases.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience serving in the US military; service in logistics or sustainment leadership roles preferred.
  • Possess an understanding of software development, and the unique deployment and accreditation aspects of building and operationalizing software within the military.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to interact with customers, team members, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to lead a cross-disciplinary team, and interface with other teams across Engineering, Product, and Growth.
  • Willingness to travel 25-50% to support program objectives and customer engagements.
  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Must have an active U.S. secret security clearance.
Benefits
Rune offers top-tier benefits for full-time employees to include a full suite of insurance options at no cost for employees and low-cost to spouses and dependents. Highly competitive equity grants are also included in the majority of full time offers and are considered part of Rune's total compensation package. Benefits include:
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans; premiums 100% covered by Rune for all employees; exceptionally low premiums for spouses and dependents
  • Basic life insurance and disability 100% covered for all employees by Rune; option to purchase additional life insurance available
  • 'Take the time off that you need, when you need it' paid time off, not accrual based
  • Generous company holiday calendar including a holiday shutdown in December
  • Supportive leave of absence program including time off for military service, medical events, and parental leave
  • Full 401(k) retirement plan for all full-time eligible employees
  • Company-funded commuter benefits
  • Free access to on-site gym at office
