What Does a Picker/Packer Do?

Picker packers find and collect merchandise in a warehouse and prepare the items for shipment to customers. As a picker packer, you use a computer or scanner to check inventory and locate items. You load items onto dollies or conveyer belts to move them throughout the distribution center, and then you assemble packages for shipping. • Perform and document weekly safety observation tours to identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, and support a strong safety culture.
  • Plan daily workload in advance, including staffing, equipment allocation, and task assignments, to ensure smooth shift operations.
  • Support colleagues and other supervisors to optimize performance across both shifts and maintain consistent operational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable contractual requirements at both the national and local levels.
  • Enforce shop rules consistently and fairly while maintaining positive working relationships with employees.
  • Perform daily Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) audit checks to verify adherence to established processes and identify areas for improvement.
  • Advance personal leadership and technical skills through the Individual Development Plan (IDP) process.
  • Keep relevant internal committees or stakeholders informed of pending activities, changes, or issues within the department.
  • Oversee warehouse activities such as shipping, receiving, inventory management, and logistics coordination using RF scanners and other warehouse systems.
  • Supervise shipping operations that include handling GM factory OEM transmissions, related components, and wheels, ensuring accurate and timely shipment to distribution centers, dealers, auto parts stores, and e-commerce customers.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives or special projects by identifying opportunities, implementing solutions, and tracking results.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, ensuring housekeeping standards are met throughout the shift.
  • Balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, including coaching employee behavior, monitoring throughput, and reporting team goals.
  • Maintain performance and composure when faced with operational challenges, demonstrating strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Use warehouse management tools, including scan gun systems and WMS (as implemented), to support accurate inventory tracking and order processing.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5+ years of warehouse experience, preferably in manufacturing, assembly, or warehousing environments.
  • Proven experience in direct supervision or management of employees, ideally in a union environment.
  • Experience supervising approximately 15 or more union employees, including familiarity with UAW environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and hold team members accountable through progressive discipline, including verbal counseling, written documentation, and termination when required.
  • Strong comfort and effectiveness in managing performance and enforcing accountability with union team members.
  • Experience in warehouse management, shipping and receiving, and overall warehouse operations.

  • Forklift or material handling experience within a warehouse or distribution setting.
  • Prior involvement in large-scale warehouse operations handling high trailer volumes per day.
  • Experience working in facilities that support multiple locations or satellite sites.
  • Interest in ongoing professional development through structured Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

Why Work Here?

You will join a large, growth-oriented operation that strongly emphasizes employee development and internal promotion. The facility has a proven track record of converting contract employees into direct roles and providing opportunities to advance within the broader network of locations. You will gain exposure to complex, high-volume distribution operations, work closely with supportive leadership, and benefit from a culture that values continuous improvement, cross-training, and the export of talent to other sites. This environment offers meaningful career progression for individuals who want to build long-term experience in warehouse leadership and operations.

Work Environment

The role is based in a high-volume distribution facility of approximately 2 million square feet, with about 240 employees across two shifts and an additional smaller satellite facility. The operation runs two shifts: a first shift generally from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., and a second shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Supervisors may be assigned to the front or back end of shifts and must be flexible to work any shift, as rotation is used for development. Overtime is part of the role, with an expectation of roughly 10 hours of overtime per week, although current overtime levels are minimal. The facility handles 40–45 trailers per day across both shifts, with first shift primarily shipping to parts distribution centers nationwide and second shift focusing on shipments to dealers, auto parts stores, and online channels. The operation ships GM factory OEM transmissions, related components, and wheels, using RF scanners, timekeeping systems, and evolving WMS technology. The dress code is business casual, with no frayed, ripped, or torn clothing, no open-toe shoes, and no heels; shoes should be of leather-like material. All required personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and must be worn at all times on the plant floor, where earbuds are not allowed.
