Job description

Responsibilities and Duties:
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Assess patients for vascular access needs and determine appropriate device selection.
  • Perform insertion of PICC lines, midline catheters, and other vascular access devices using ultrasound guidance and sterile technique.
  • Verify catheter tip placement according to facility protocols.
  • Monitor patients during and after procedures for adverse reactions or complications.
  • Perform dressing changes, catheter maintenance, and troubleshooting of vascular access devices.
  • Identify and manage catheter-related complications, including infection, occlusion, thrombosis, and mechanical issues.
  • Remove vascular access devices when clinically indicated.
Patient Education
  • Educate patients and families on PICC line care, infection prevention, activity restrictions, and signs of complications.
  • Provide discharge instructions related to vascular access management.
Documentation
  • Accurately document assessments, insertion procedures, patient responses, complications, and follow-up care in the medical record.
  • Maintain records in compliance with organizational, state, and federal regulations.

Collaboration
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, infusion teams, and nursing staff regarding vascular access needs.
  • Participate in treatment planning.
  • Serve as a resource for vascular access best practices and troubleshooting.
Quality and Safety
  • Adhere to infection prevention and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor outcomes related to vascular access procedures.
  • Participate in audits, competency assessments, and continuing education programs.
  • Ensure compliance with Infusion Nurses Society (INS), CDC, and organizational standards.
Qualifications
Education
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Licensure and Certification
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Vascular Access Board Certification (VA-BC®) preferred.
  • PICC insertion competency certification as required by the organization.
