Job description

Position Overview:
The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a Directorate of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, is seeking a Research Associate (RA) with a strong experimental background in quantum science, particularly a field relevant to device applications. The successful candidate will join the dynamic scientific research environment in the Soft X-ray Group o f the Materials Sciences Division.
In this RA position, you are expected to lead the efforts to expand a research program to the field of quantum information science (QIS) at SSRL . Your research will address challenges in QIS applications through advanced methodological techniques while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration at SLAC and Stanford University.
The Soft X-ray Group has established frontier research programs on quantum materials utilizing state-of-the-art capabilities, particularly resonant X-ray scattering. You will have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge sciences and publish lead-author manuscripts. Additionally, you will also contribute significantly to the interdisciplinary research program by supporting general user experiments and developing advanced instruments and new experimental capabilities.
You r specific responsibilities include:
  • Establish a research program in the field of QIS and relevant materials and applications at SSRL.
  • Explore research topics in QIS, with a special emphasis on the application of X-ray techniques.
  • Utilize the existing soft X-ray beamlines at SSRL, particularly for scattering, to study quantum materials.
  • Work with general user groups to support their experiments.
  • Develop new experimental capabilities for future science.
Note: The Research Associate role is a fixed-term staff position. It is a two-year appointment beginning immediately, with the possibility of extension contingent upon project needs and funding.
Applicants must provide either a recently completed PhD degree or confirmation of completion of the PhD degree requirements prior to starting the position. Applicants should also include a cover letter, a statement of research area including a summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, and names of three references for future letters of recommendation with the application. SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA. Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, applied physics, or a related discipline.
  • Research experience in the field of materials science, preferably in quantum materials.
  • Knowledge and experience with QIS and/or device applications are strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated competence in operating and maintaining complex experimental systems.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Some experience in conducting X-ray scattering measurements at synchrotron facilities.
  • Some experience in handling 2-dimensional materials and heterostructures.
