Job Description
The University of Missouri holds a broad scope radioactive materials license issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, authorizing the clinical and research use of radioactive materials across the University Hospital, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the main campus. This position plays a key role in supporting the safe and effective use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment, contributing to the overall management of the University's radiation safety program. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, promoting a culture of safety, and providing expert guidance to personnel. The successful candidate will possess the ability to clearly communicate complex radiation safety concepts to a diverse audience, including university staff, researchers, and regulatory agencies.
You'll be part of a collaborative team that values safety, integrity, and continuous improvement. Each day brings a chance to support cutting-edge research and clinical work, while gaining hands-on experience with real-world radiation safety practices. This role offers exposure to diverse work environments - including laboratories, medical and veterinary facilities, and waste management operations - and provides opportunities for learning and professional development.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in the permitting of clinical and research radioactive material users under the Mizzou radioactive materials license.
• Use professional judgment to assess situations and make decisions related to the radiation safety program.
• Inspect facilities that use radioactive materials, radiation producing machines, sealed sources, generally licensed devices, and lasers.
• Perform audits of user permits to assess compliance with the Mizzou radioactive materials license and to identify areas that need improvement.
• Communicate competently with radiation workers, the radiation safety committee, the Mizzou community, and federal and state regulators.
• Inspect and calibrate radiation safety related instrumentation.
• Other radiation safety related duties.
Shift
M-F, 8 hours/day
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
• A Master's degree in health physics or a related field.
• Must currently possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days, a valid Missouri Driver's License.
• Ability to meet initial and as needed fitness-for-duty (drug and alcohol testing), background screening, training, driving records, strength/dexterity, and other requirements necessary for complete job performance for campus and hospital radiation safety programs.
• Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job (i.e., ability to lift up to 50 lbs.), to be able to perform laboratory monitoring, and conduct surveys using various types and sometimes cumbersome survey instruments.
• Possess working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to read and communicate effectively.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Salary Range: $60,000 - $65,000 annually
Grade: GGS-10
