Job description

ADJUNCT FACULTY - PHYSICS
KENNEDY KING COLLEGE

Kennedy King College is currently seeking an in-person part-time Faculty to teach Physics. If you have passion for teaching and learning and are committed to the mission of the community college, consider joining our team. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in the classroom by developing and using effective teaching strategies that meet students' diverse needs and engage the student in critical thinking and problem-solving. The Lecturer will facilitate courses, counsel students, prepare lectures, grade assignments, and participate in committees that support the college community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide in-person instruction during scheduled class time.

  • Create an effective learning environment that fosters students' intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies.

  • Prepare, deliver and facilitate class lectures and discussions to students on topics related to course objectives and student learning outcomes.

  • Prepare course materials, including course syllabi; evaluate student work/performance; log student participation (i.e. attendance).

  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.

  • Compile, administer, and grade examinations; evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.

  • Hold office hours for student conferences and other instructional support needs.

  • Participate in various department and or college-wide activities or committees.

  • Complete all mandatory midterm/final grading and active pursuit certifications required by the college.

  • Help students reach their academic, personal and career goals and foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn.

  • Contribute to and provide leadership in the student's academic and professional communities and promote collaboration and teamwork among members of these communities.

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Instructing - teaching others how to do something.

  • Speaking - talking to others to convey information effectively.

  • Writing - communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

  • Active Listening - giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

  • Learning Strategies - selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.

  • Active Learning - understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Critical Thinking - using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Monitoring - monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

  • Complex Problem Solving - identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  • Written Comprehension - the ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

  • Oral Expression - the ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.

  • Oral Comprehension - the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

  • Written Expression - the ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Physics

- OR -

Master's degree in Engineering Physics

  • Content expertise, innovative pedagogy, cooperative approach, commitment to student mentoring, commitment to the mission of the college.
  • Specific content knowledge in the following subjects at Kennedy-King College (see link provided): https://catalog.ccc.edu/courses-az/physics/
  • Knowledge of Brightspace Learning Management System, preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students required.
  • Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.

The starting salary for this position is $800.00 - $943.00 per contact hour. The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
