What is a physics based machine learning?

A Physics Based Machine Learning job involves developing machine learning models that incorporate physical laws and domain knowledge to improve predictions and interpretability. Professionals in this field work at the intersection of physics, data science, and artificial intelligence to create models that are more robust, generalizable, and efficient, especially in scientific and engineering applications. Responsibilities often include data analysis, algorithm development, numerical simulations, and integrating physics-based constraints into ML models. These roles are common in industries like climate science, robotics, materials science, and computational physics.

What does a physics based machine learning professional do?

Physics Based Machine Learning professionals often work on projects that involve applying machine learning techniques to physical systems, such as improving simulations in engineering, optimizing energy systems, or accelerating scientific research through data-driven modeling. Daily tasks might include developing algorithms that incorporate physical laws, analyzing simulation data, and collaborating with experts from engineering, data science, or research teams. The role can involve both theoretical and hands-on work, often requiring iterative testing and validation. This environment provides opportunities to tackle cutting-edge challenges, contribute to innovation, and potentially lead to career paths in research, product development, or advanced analytics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in physics based machine learning?

To thrive in Physics Based Machine Learning, you need advanced knowledge of physics, strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or C++), and a deep understanding of machine learning and statistical modeling, typically supported by a master's or PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software, scientific computing libraries (such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, NumPy), and version control systems is essential. Strong problem-solving ability, effective communication, and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for designing robust, real-world models that integrate physical principles with data-driven techniques to solve complex problems.

Job description

Team Description:
Kitware is seeking a Biomedical Modeler to join the Computer Vision team. In this role, you'll develop computational models of biological systems that support cutting-edge research in medical imaging, biomechanics, physiology, and digital health. You'll work closely with software developers, AI researchers, clinicians, and domain scientists to create validated models that answer challenging scientific and clinical questions.

About the Projects:
Kitware's employees have unique opportunities to interact and collaborate directly with customers, visit interesting customer sites, and participate in live field tests and demonstrations. Much of Kitware's work involves applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and mechanistic modeling approaches to dynamic, real-world problems. We consider the work that we do on our government contracts as one of the ways that we give back to the community. We partner with premier government R&D agencies such as DARPA, IARPA, ARPA-H, DHA, AFRL, Army C5ISR, NOAA, and other branches of the US Government on a range of efforts, including prime contracts, SBIRs, and STTRs. In addition, we provide commercial services to companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Kitware employs an open source business model to foster extended, collaborative communities and to provide effective, flexible, and high-quality technical solutions.
In This Position You Will:
  • Develop computational and mathematical models of the human body and human physiology.
  • Create patient-specific models using medical imaging data (CT, MRI, ultrasound, microscopy, etc.).
  • Design and implement biomechanical, physiological, or multi-physics simulations.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate models into research software and production applications.
  • Validate models using experimental or clinical data.
  • Work directly with clinicians, researchers, and sponsors to understand technical requirements.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to Kitware's open source software ecosystem.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree + 2 years of experience or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • Experience developing computational or mathematical models of the human body.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ or Python (C++ preferred).
  • Experience with scientific computing and numerical methods.
  • Familiarity with medical imaging and image processing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Due to contractual requirements, only U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
  • If not already cleared TS/SCI, willingness and ability to apply for and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the Pulse Physiology Engine.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Biomechanics.
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Cardiovascular modeling.
  • Digital twins.
  • Multiscale modeling.
  • Medical image segmentation and registration.
  • AI or machine learning applied to biomedical data.
  • Grant proposal development and sponsored research.
$110,000 - $150,000 a year
