Job Summary

The College of Sciences (https://cos.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for the Jack and Dana McCallum Family Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Central Nervous System Research. This program will provide flexible funding to support the career development of early-career researchers conducting clinically relevant neuroscience research to become competitive for permanent tenure-track faculty positions. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD in neuroscience or a related field by the start of the fellowship. The program prioritizes candidates who can strengthen collaborative research efforts between Georgia Tech College of Sciences and Emory University School of Medicine, particularly focusing on clinically relevant translational research on the central nervous system. The fellowship provides independent salary support and research funding, enabling fellows to work closely with a primary faculty mentor in Georgia Techs College of Sciences while contributing to interdisciplinary, cross-institutional research initiatives. This is a full-time position, 40 hours weekly.

Responsibilities

We seek a highly motivated candidate who is interested in pursuing a research program in neuroscience that is clinically relevant. The candidate will conduct research based out of a current faculty member's lab in the Georgia Tech College of Sciences, or in a collaborator's lab at Emory University. The candidate will be expected to:

1. Mentor: The role will involve regular co-mentorship of PhD students, including weekly one-on-one meetings to discuss and troubleshoot experiments, monitor progress, and provide guidance. A summary of each meeting will be shared and discussed with the Fellow's faculty mentor.

2. Write grant and fellowship proposals: The position includes leading the preparation of grant proposals and fellowship applications to various funding agencies (e.g., NIH.). Responsibilities include gathering data, reviewing relevant literature, and drafting full proposals with accompanying figures and references.

3. Prepare and write manuscripts for publication: The Fellow will write and organize manuscripts for publication. This includes summarizing results, structuring content, and overseeing the submission and revision process. The Fellow will also assist PhD students and other research trainees in the publication process.

4. Develop an independent research program: One of the primary training goals of this program is to develop the Fellow to be competitive for future tenure-track faculty positions. The Fellow will be expected to develop and initiate a research program that complements existing programs of the faculty mentor(s); yet is independent enough to demonstrate a trajectory toward independent research as a principal investigator.

Required Qualifications

PhD in neuroscience or a related discipline by the start of the fellowship period.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a collaborative research environment as a graduate student or as a postdoctoral trainee.

  • Experience with research in neuroscience or a related discipline, with preference given for clinically relevant studies of the central nervous system.

  • Evidence of scholarly work such as publications, conference presentations, grant proposals, etc.

  • Experience in mentoring or teaching

  • Letters of Support (3 to 5): A letter should be included from each proposed faculty mentor in the program confirming willingness to serve as a faculty mentor for the applicant, addressing the feasibility of the proposed research, and indicating availability of necessary physical resources for the project. Additional letters of support are allowed from current mentors speaking to the applicants potential and promise as a future researcher and academic faculty member.

Other Information
