What is a PHP JavaScript developer?

PHP JavaScript Developers are software professionals who specialize in building web applications using both PHP and JavaScript. They typically handle back-end logic and server-side scripting with PHP, while using JavaScript for client-side interactivity and dynamic content. This dual expertise allows them to create full-stack solutions that range from building APIs and managing databases to developing interactive user interfaces. Their role often involves integrating databases, optimizing application performance, and ensuring seamless communication between the front-end and back-end parts of web applications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a PHP JavaScript developer?

To thrive as a PHP JavaScript Developer, you need strong proficiency in PHP and JavaScript programming, a solid understanding of web development concepts, and often a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony for PHP, and React or Vue.js for JavaScript, as well as version control systems like Git is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate efficiently and deliver high-quality code. These skills ensure robust, scalable web applications and seamless teamwork in dynamic development environments.

How do PHP JavaScript developers typically collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

PHP JavaScript Developers often serve as a bridge between front-end designers and backend engineers. They collaborate closely with designers to turn UI/UX mockups into interactive web features using JavaScript, ensuring visual accuracy and responsiveness. At the same time, they work with backend teams to integrate APIs and server-side logic, often using PHP, and troubleshoot issues that arise between client-side and server-side components. Regular communication and agile development practices, such as daily stand-ups and code reviews, help ensure smooth collaboration and project success.

Full-time

Job description

Covington, OH (in-office)  |  Full-time, exempt  |  $50,000–$100,000/year DOE

Build the software insurance companies actually run on.

Not a feature buried three layers deep in someone else's platform. Not a ticket queue you never see the end of. At Marias Technology, you build custom software solutions, system integrations, and data extraction tools that our insurance clients depend on daily — and you own them from requirements through deployment.

As a Software Developer on our Software Services team, you'll write clean, maintainable code in Java, SQL, TypeScript, and JavaScript; design APIs and integrations that let separate systems talk to each other; and deploy to Azure and AWS. You'll see your work reach production and you'll know exactly who it helps.

We're a family-owned business, which shapes how we work more than you might expect. Decisions get made by people you can walk up to. Your name is attached to what you ship. And nobody here is siloed on one narrow slice of a system nobody understands end to end.

What you'll do

  • Develop custom software solutions, system integrations, and data extraction tools for insurance company clients
  • Build solutions that enable multiple systems to communicate and share data effectively
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-structured code using Java, SQL, TypeScript, JavaScript, and other technologies in our stack
  • Read and interpret technical specifications and business requirements to determine scope, deliverables, and level of effort
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs, webhook integrations, and data exchange processes between systems
  • Test and debug your work before release, and support defect resolution identified during QA
  • Participate in code reviews as both author and reviewer — giving constructive feedback, not just receiving it
  • Apply Git version control best practices and participate in CI/CD workflows
  • Deploy, monitor, and support solutions on Azure and AWS
  • Document code, solutions, and technical processes clearly for the team
  • Communicate status, technical challenges, risks, and estimates to the Software Services Manager and project team
  • Collaborate with testers, analysts, and client stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve issues
  • Provide technical guidance to Software Developer Interns and less experienced teammates
  • Learn additional languages and frameworks as project needs require

What you need

Required

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field — or equivalent demonstrated professional development experience
  • Working proficiency in one or more of: Java, SQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Python
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles, data structures, and algorithms
  • Experience with relational databases and writing SQL queries
  • Experience with Git in a collaborative development environment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and business requirements
  • Ability to work full-time, in-office in Covington, OH

Preferred

  • Prior professional software development experience, including internship experience
  • Experience designing or consuming RESTful APIs and webhook integrations
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS), CI/CD workflows, and modern deployment practices
  • Familiarity with additional languages and frameworks we use — VB.NET, Python, PHP, Angular, Node.js
  • Experience with automated testing practices
  • Prior insurance industry knowledge, or willingness to learn insurance terminology and workflows on the job
  • Personal coding projects, hackathon participation, or open-source contributions

The range is wide on purpose

$50,000–$100,000 depending on experience is a real range, not a negotiating posture. We're open to a developer a year or two out of school who writes solid code and wants to grow, and we're equally open to an experienced engineer who can own complex integrations from day one. Where you land depends on what you bring — tell us honestly where you are and we'll do the same.

Who thrives here

  • You own your work. From requirements through deployment, not just until it compiles
  • You write for the next person. Maintainable beats clever
  • You review well in both directions. You give useful feedback and you take it without defensiveness
  • You estimate honestly and raise blockers early instead of hoping they resolve themselves
  • You can explain technical things to non-technical people. Clients and analysts are part of this job
  • You have integrity. You do the right thing when it's inconvenient, and you own your mistakes
