What Is a PHP Developer?

A PHP developer designs and implements server-side web programs using the programming language PHP. This language exists across a wide variety of web applications, and its versatility makes it suitable for HTML embedding. As a PHP developer, you are in charge of designing programs and apps as well as websites. Producing user documentation is another aspect of your work as a PHP developer.

What are some common challenges a PHP Developer might face when working on large-scale projects?

PHP Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges like maintaining legacy code, ensuring code scalability, and integrating with various third-party APIs or databases. Managing performance and security is also critical, as larger applications can be more vulnerable to security threats and may require optimization to handle high traffic. Effective communication with front-end developers, QA teams, and project managers is essential to address these challenges and deliver robust, maintainable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PHP Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PHP Developer, you need strong proficiency in PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and a solid understanding of databases such as MySQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, version control systems such as Git, and knowledge of front-end technologies are typically required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills that help PHP Developers excel. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, efficient, and scalable web applications that meet client and business needs.

Job description

Full Stack Developer

Add yourself to Offstreet's Technical Talent Pool

Offstreet is a fast-growing tech startup on a mission to simplify parking management through outstanding technology. We're building software that simplifies and scales the way organizations manage guest and validated parking - and we're looking for builders who care more about solving problems than job titles.

This posting isn't tied to an open role, but we're growing fast - we're always looking to connect with curious, values-driven developers who thrive in high-growth environments. If you love taking ownership, collaborating across teams, and writing code that actually ships, we want to hear from you.

Note: At this time, we're prioritizing applications from local candidates (Regina/Saskatchewan-based)

Who You Are

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Want to be part of a high-growth, early-stage startup
  • Care about building great products - not chasing job titles
  • Hold yourself to a high standard and enjoy working with others who do the same
  • Enjoy turning real-world problems into thoughtful technical solutions
  • Write clean, reliable code and think about performance and scale from day one
  • Believe testing, documentation, and collaboration aren't optional - they're part of building well
  • Bring a strong product mindset - you think about the user, not just the code
  • Are resourceful, self-directed, and excited to move quickly with a smart, supportive team

What You'll Work With

We use a modern, full-stack TypeScript environment built for scalability and speed:

  • Frontend: React (TypeScript), Tailwind
  • Backend: Node.js (TypeScript), CQRS
  • Testing: Playwright, Vitest
  • Database: MySQL (relational database)
  • Infrastructure: AWS (Lambdas, ECS, S3, SQS, Aurora MySQL), Vercel

All code is within an npm monorepo (+ Turborepo) with E2E typesafety using tRPC between frontends and the backend.

We support our workflow with GitHub, Linear, Sentry, LaunchDarkly, and Slack.

What You'll Do

As a member of our Development Team, you'll help shape our product and infrastructure as we scale:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable applications in React, Node.js, and MySQL
  • Collaborate closely with Product to turn requirements into delightful technical solutions
  • Identify and resolve complex issues while mentoring and supporting teammates
  • Lead new feature development or system upgrades with an eye on long-term maintainability
  • Participate in planning, retros, and team reviews-bringing your voice to the table
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines and deploy feature-flagged code with confidence
  • Write clear, testable, and well-documented code
  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, speed, and continuous improvement

Why Offstreet?

We operate like a sports team-high trust, high performance, and lots of support. We're not big on hierarchy. We care about impact, good ideas, and building the best experience-for our users and each other.

As part of a growing startup, you'll have autonomy, influence, and the chance to build meaningful things from the ground up. Whether you're leading a new feature or shipping a quick fix that makes someone's day easier, your work here matters.

Add yourself to our Technical Talent Pool.

This posting stays open because we're always looking for great people. If your experience aligns with what we're building, we'll be in touch.
