Photonics Postdoc Jobs in Florida (NOW HIRING)

Photonics Postdoc information

What is a photonics postdoc?

Photonics Postdocs are researchers who have completed their doctoral studies and are engaged in advanced research in the field of photonics, which involves the study and application of light (photons). They typically work at universities, research institutions, or industry labs to develop new optical technologies, conduct experiments, and publish scientific papers. These positions are often temporary, lasting from one to three years, and are intended to further develop the researcher's expertise and prepare them for permanent academic or industry roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a photonics postdoc?

To thrive as a Photonics Postdoc, you need an advanced degree (typically a Ph.D.) in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field, with expertise in optics and photonics principles. Familiarity with optical simulation software, laboratory instrumentation, and data analysis tools is typically required, along with experience in experimental design. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear scientific communication are essential soft skills for success. These competencies enable innovative research, effective teamwork, and dissemination of findings in a highly technical and collaborative academic environment.

What are some common challenges faced by photonics postdocs when transitioning from academic research to industry roles?

Photonics postdocs often find the shift from academia to industry challenging due to differences in project timelines, expectations, and communication styles. In industry, results-driven projects may require faster turnaround and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, emphasizing practical applications over theoretical exploration. Adjusting to proprietary research, intellectual property policies, and the need for concise reporting are also common hurdles. Developing strong project management and communication skills can help ease this transition and open opportunities for career growth in both research and development settings.

Job Description:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) at the University of Florida (UF) is soliciting applications for a full-time, twelve-month, time-limited, non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Scientist in Integrated Photonics and Optomechanics under the supervision of Prof. Philip Feng, the Wally Rhines Endowed Professor of Quantum Engineering, in Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and a Graduate Faculty Professor in Department of Physics at UF.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida is a recognized leader in advancing solid-state devices, photonics, and nanotechnology. For more information about the department, please visit https://www.ece.ufl.edu/.
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant Scientist will conduct advanced experimental research in integrated photonics, optomechanics, and nanophotonics within Prof. Philip Feng's interdisciplinary research group. The primary focus will be on utilizing emerging wide-bandgap materials and novel architectures to investigate light-matter interactions and optomechanical phenomena at extreme device scaling limits. Key technical duties include designing and characterizing ultra-high-Q optomechanical resonators, integrating these systems with photonic integrated circuits, and executing sophisticated cleanroom fabrication techniques such as electron beam lithography and dry etching processes.
The successful candidate will prepare comprehensive scientific reports and publish findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. A critical component of this role involves actively contributing to data curation, conceptualization, and the writing of federal, state and foundation grant applications, with the strategic goal of transitioning toward principal investigator status. Additionally, the candidate will provide daily supervision and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students, drive collaborative efforts with academic partners, and develop strategies to translate functional device research into practical applications.

About University of Florida

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
