How much do photogrammetry software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for photogrammetry software engineer in the United States is $147,524.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $120,000.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Photogrammetry Software Engineers when working with large datasets?

Photogrammetry Software Engineers often work with very large datasets, such as high-resolution images and point clouds, which can present challenges in terms of data processing speed, storage requirements, and memory management. Efficiently handling and optimizing these datasets for real-time or near-real-time applications is a key part of the role. Engineers must also ensure the accuracy and quality of the 3D reconstructions while balancing computational efficiency, which often involves working closely with other engineers, data scientists, and end-users to refine algorithms and workflows.

What is a Photogrammetry Software Engineer?

A Photogrammetry Software Engineer is a professional who develops and maintains software applications that process images and sensor data to create accurate 3D models, maps, and measurements. They work with aerial, satellite, and ground-based imagery to extract spatial information used in fields such as surveying, mapping, construction, and virtual reality. Their role often involves algorithm development, image processing, and integrating photogrammetry tools with other geospatial technologies.

What is the difference between Photogrammetry Software Engineer vs GIS Software Engineer?

AspectPhotogrammetry Software EngineerGIS Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Geospatial, or related field; experience with photogrammetry toolsBachelor's in GIS, Geography, or related; knowledge of GIS platforms
Work EnvironmentDevelops software for 3D modeling, aerial imagery processing, and photogrammetric algorithmsCreates GIS applications, spatial data analysis, and mapping solutions
Industry UsageUsed in surveying, drone mapping, and remote sensingApplied in urban planning, environmental management, and logistics

While both roles involve geospatial data and software development, Photogrammetry Software Engineers focus on processing aerial imagery and 3D modeling, whereas GIS Software Engineers develop mapping and spatial analysis tools. The roles often overlap but serve different specialized functions within geospatial technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Photogrammetry Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Photogrammetry Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++ or Python), a background in computer vision or mathematics, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with photogrammetry software (such as Agisoft Metashape or Pix4D), 3D graphics libraries, and experience with image processing algorithms are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this position. These competencies ensure accurate development and optimization of photogrammetric solutions, which are crucial for reliable 3D modeling and geospatial data analysis.
