Job description

The State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) is seeking a detail-oriented, motivated Document Imaging Technician to support the final phase of a project focused on enhancing access to, and preservation of, documents related to SHSND-managed State Historic Sites.
Working closely with subject matter experts from the State Archives and Archaeology and Historic Preservation departments, the Technician will digitize documents, enter data, and assist with content management and digital preservation.
Duration: 32-40 hours per week, through June 2027.
Duties and Tasks
The Technician will follow established standards to scan documents, photographs, and oversized drawings using various scanners and photo editing software to perform basic edits like cropping and rotating. The Technician will also describe and properly house the materials after digitization, ensuring careful handling of historical items. Tasks will range from repetitive to more complex work, so attention to detail, independence, and a willingness to learn are essential. Strong communication and teamwork skills are important due to the collaborative nature of this project. Onsite training will be provided, offering a unique opportunity to work directly with historical records from North Dakota's past.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Basic research skills
  • Requires a documented background in history, archival studies, library or information science, communications, media studies, or a closely related liberal arts or social science field, or two yearsof professional work experience in the management, preservation, and conservation of archival material

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with experience scanning large number of documents or photographs in a professional setting, using various scanners (including large-format), and working with Photoshop or similar photo editing software. Familiarity with archival standards and best practices, metadata standards, and collection management systems such as Re:Discovery Proficio and Preservica is also desirable, as is an interest in North Dakota's geography and history.
