Job Title: Phlebotomist in Woodstock

Job Description

This role focuses on performing high-quality phlebotomy services, including blood draws and other specimen collections, while delivering courteous and professional customer service to patients of all ages, with an emphasis on geriatric populations. The Phlebotomist II accurately collects, labels, processes, and stores specimens in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards, ensuring the integrity of all samples for laboratory testing. This position also supports daily laboratory operations by maintaining equipment, documenting required information, and responding to patient and provider inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
  • Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (such as urine or fecal collection) clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Collect and store specimens in strict accordance with established procedures and protocols to maintain sample integrity.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that patient information and test orders are accurate and complete.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain appropriate temperature and integrity during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling them and following protocol-specific procedures.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support safe and compliant laboratory operations.
  • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records as needed.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct test selection and specimen handling.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and adhere to all safety and infection control procedures at all times.
  • Attend and complete annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with established policies.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, clinical staff, and other stakeholders, maintaining a courteous and respectful demeanor.
  • Handle a high volume of patient draws per day while maintaining accuracy, quality, and patient-focused care.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Ability to perform 35 or more straight needle sticks confidently and safely.
  • Proficiency with venipuncture on all age groups, with a primary focus on geriatric patients.
  • Experience performing approximately 30 or more patient draws per day in a clinical setting.
  • High school diploma (HS Diploma).
  • Strong customer service skills and experience interacting directly with patients.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify all information.
  • Competence in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens according to test requirements.
  • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.

Work Environment

The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. You work primarily in a clinical laboratory and patient care environment, handling blood and other biological specimens while using standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges. The setting emphasizes safety, compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, and adherence to established laboratory protocols. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
