Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications

In addition to obtaining blood samples, collecting, transporting and processing these specimens in a timely manner this position will maintain order in phlebotomy. Along with following established guidelines for processing of the specimens to include accessioning, centrifugation, delivery of specimens to technical areas, and following all safety and infection control guidelines established by the hospital and the Laboratory They will also assist Team Members and/or Supervisors in whatever project or task is assigned to facilitate efficient and accurate specimen processing. Will also assist with scheduling, monitoring staff productivity, performance documentation and projects on-going in the department. Complies with the Memorial Health Compliance Program, related policies and procedures and the Code of Business Practices; reports instances of perceived and actual non-compliance to Supervisor or through other reporting mechanisms.

  • Determines tube type, volume, and techniques necessary for requested test, obtains specimen through the most efficient route, transports specimens to Laboratory, and assists nursing services in blood collection as needed and/or requested.
  • Practices error prevention techniques in verifying patient and specimen and patient identification prior to any phlebotomy procedure.
  • Accountable to any errors that occur as a result of not following policy.
  • Processes specimens to include accessioning, centrifugation, labeling, and distribution; verifying again patient identification prior to labeling and/or delivery to technical areas.
  •  Pays attention to detail and focuses on specimens by priority and/or schedule assignment as appropriate, ensuring that critical or STAT specimens are handled appropriately and routine work in not delayed unnecessarily.
  • Understands and demonstrates skills in appropriate care for all ages of patients with whom they perform phlebotomy services on, and this is documented as part of their annual competencies.
  • Utilizes the Label Bar Coding System, collects and labels specimens following Laboratory policy using timeliness and accuracy.
  • Communicates effectively with peers, nurses, laboratory team members, supervisors, etc.
  • Reviews and researches uncollected logs and makes proper decisions to resolve outstanding orders consulting with other Laboratory
  • Team Members as necessary. Communicates any issues with log or other issues as shift changes and at other times as necessary.
  • Passes off communication devices per policy.
  • Makes Team Member schedules for all shifts.
  • Makes Time edits, corrections and comments daily in Kronos.
  • Oversees the productivity of the team members.
  • Facilitates the training of new phlebotomy team members.
  • Initiates Disciplinary actions by gathering all information and escalates to Supervisor for delivery to team member.
  • Facilitates supply orders.
  • Facilitates Team member huddles to communicate any directives.
  • Assists supervisor and manger by performing other reasonable duties as requested and/or required.
